while the remington 870 is a truly great gun but i have to recommend the mossberg 500 field combo.it comes with both a ported interchangable choke shot barrel, and a ported cantilever rifled slug barrel.it sells for about $250 at any dick's sporting goods.

For bird hunting, my preference is for a good side by side double in 12 gauge. My favorite is my old Fox Model B, but you can find lots of Stevens M-311's, which are great field grade guns, at modest prices.
For things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, I keep a Mossberg M-500 with an 18.5" barrel next to the bed.
When I go shooting claybirds, I use either my old Fox, or a LeFever Nitro Special.

Rem 870 is probably the best pump action produced, barrel length and finish will depend on your needs.
However if you are not really a gun collector Mossberg is cheap, versatile, and tough. You can also change out the barrels in less than two minutes.

Get a Browning over and under. You can't go wrong and will have a nice shotgun that your friends will envy.
