Of course it is, though most deny it. The god they worship is self, believing there is no higher power than self, self rules the day for them. They subscribe to what they want to and deny anything else. Sad, but true.

No, but it can be, in a way. For example, I belong to the Ethical Society of St. Louis, which meets on Sunday mornings and has the legal status of a religion. But it's not a strictly atheist organization. Some people there are atheists (I am), but plenty are believers of one sort or another who simply prefer it to whatever they might otherwise be doing on Sunday morning. Since many are Jewish, at least by heritage, it's quite possible they go to temple on Saturday and to the Ethical Society on Sunday.

For purposes of legal protection, atheism is a religion because it involves a set of personal beliefs that are protected under the law against discrimination. For the purposes of general discussion, however, almost all religions involve some belief in God or the supernatural, and in that respect, atheism does not qualify as a religion.

Like I've stated on other posts... I think of atheists as having a belief system/faith/religion, because they believe in things that they do not see firsthand (evolution for example), and they follow ideas ("doctrines") of things in the world taught by people who profess to know the truth (i.e. scientists that state their "fact", based on previous theories), and they have a faith in there being no God. They also worship, but worship things in the world. So I believe it to be true, that they at least have a united faith system, if not a religion.

At most, you could only call it a religious category. If you categorize all people by what religious superstition they believe, then atheists would be that part that's left over.
A religion is a belief in one or more gods, along with any rites and rituals associated with it. An atheist is simply someone who lacks that particular belief.

No. It's the opposite. Calling it a religion is like saying no cookies is the same has having cookies.
"... i heard it somewhere..."
This kind of thing does not come from us however. A person should always be skeptical of certain things, like that, if it doesn't originate from the mouths of the people in question.

No, atheism is not a religion.
Religions require the belief in gods and certain doctrines, and practice certain rituals.
Atheism requires only that you do not believe in god/s. Atheism requires nothing else.

It is a viewpoint about religion, and this is perhaps why some people are confused into thinking it is a religion.
