I ask this here because of all the nuts in the Religion and Spirituality. But doesn't religion and its talk of 'sin' and 'morality', both of which change from generation to generation and from culture to culture, try to control behavior, law, sexual ownership, maintaining the staus quo? It seems to concern itself with pie in the sky very little, actually.

To anyone who doesn't think that "sin" and "morality" DO change from generation to generation, I challenge them to read the whole of the book of Leviticus, and see just how much our morality has changed, and is no longer applicable in today's society.

Religion is the opiate of the masses. Period. Anyone who can't see that is so drugged by the opiate they no longer have a clear vision.

Also, spirituality and religion are two very, very different things.

So in a nutshell, Gene, absolutely, religion is about control.

Religion is about believing in something beyond humanity. It is spiritual.
What each religion and culture see as religion differs.
I would think if a person feels like they are being controlled by their religion, it is not the kind of religion they should be into.
It should be something that feels natural and part of your spirit.
What is pie in the sky?

If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.
'Control' is simply another term for 'DISCIPLINE'. We all have to be guided by rules, otherwise total chaos would occur, right?
Man has always tried to break Yah's BONDS, His commandments...
Psa 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
Psa 2:3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
Psa 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
Psa 2:5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

The last thing I worry about is 'sin' .. Religion is about the relationship with the Creator. It's about love. I find my self not wanting to sin, and it has nothing to do with LAWs and CONTROL .. I want to in some small way follow the teachings of Jesus. I want to love and help my fellow man. I feel great joy and peace and happiness in my life.

Religion is concerned with Truth and God. The Church exists to help people get into Heaven. Truth doesn't change, nor does God.

Flawed people are involved in the implementation of religion, so of course it will be as imperfect as those implementing it.

I would take issue with your comment about sin and morality...it does not change from generation to generation and I am not speaking of "peripheral" liberties afforded in the many and diverse cultures,worldwide...but rather, issues of the mind and heart..The Bible states:"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. For the Christian,(in particular),religion is about willing submission to God in pursuit of holiness in daily sanctification,as well as being in covenant and personal relationship with the Creator, through his Son,Jesus the Christ,as we strive to become Christ-like in our thinking and by our actions..

Religion for "the Christian" is not about control..but rather the giving up of control,in deference to the will of God....

James the brother of Jesus, described Religion as such: "Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world".

False religion is about control, and much more. True religion is about liberty and freedom found in Christ.

There is a great gulf between the two.
