I know I have not been on Yahoo for very long , but do you think you have a responsibility to answer some questions with a little thought. For instance do you think about why the questioner has asked a specific question.
I have just answered one in the last few minutes to a child who is probably very scared and some answers are so stupid and dangerous. Is this whole thing to be taken as a joke...is it just for points.....or should we really think carefully about our answers.....I would appreciate decent answers but then I suppose I can expect the worse...do your best.

Reply to travelle....No I dont have control issues....and No I am not the Yahoo Police nor would I want to interfere with anyones freedom of speech. I thought that this was advertised as a community based group where we could share our knowledge and sense of humour. Isn't the aim of any community group to help out when you think you can, it was the last time I looked, but If you read my question I was talking about young vulnerable people and the responsibility that all grown up people should have towards the above. Some people do have real issues on here and others its just fun....for me I am just a softie with a sense of humour and I like to help if I can.

People should be more considerate towards other peoples feelings as not everything is a joke!. There are a lot of people out there hurting and it only takes a careless comment to make them feel a lot worse in themselves, i personally feel there is too much of a "i dont care attitude" which is quite sad.
I am far from perfect but i personally enjoy helping other people that are in need whether it is emotionally or physically as i find it rewarding and uplifting to know i have helped someone or put a smile on someones face.

Yes, you're right. We should think before we ask and answer the questions; and also think about who might be reading our questions and answers. There are alot of young people & some children who view the questions and answers on Yahoo Answers, so I always try to bear that in mind.
When we read back our questions or answers (hopefully before we press the submit button) sometimes, they don't sound as good as we thought they did!
I am not the Yahoo Police. I am just a mother who would not want any child to to read something he or she shouldn't be reading.
It's sad when a young person has a problem, or someone is desperate & the 'advice' given is totally inappropriate or abusive. Surely it would be better not to give an opinion at all in this case?
There are plenty of topics to which a humourous answer can be given to. We can still give funny answers to questions, which are not serious to the asker. There's no need for anyone to be mean or rude though. It wouldn't be a community then.

Yes, it is a shame. Unfortunately though, this is the Internet, and Yahoo! have designed this site to be extremely addictive, which attracts a lot of fools. Some categories are worse than others in this respect..Just take a look at the News and Current Events section..That's a complete joke. I've found that you're most likely to get serious and sincere answers if you ask something technical or very specific. On the whole though, I think most people seem to use this site as a means of entertainment, which usually involves hate, spite, and insult, or complete idiocy.

i know what you mean. this site is not for the feint hearted.some times you have to post your question wearing a tin hat and a flack jacket. 'personally i love the snide comments and the banter' but yea!......i suppose you could! actually hurt some one quite badly by taking the piss inappropriately. the problem is that theres no way of knowing exactly why some one asks a particular question. you cant see a face. theres no way to make a judgement realy. it wouldnt hurt to take a few seconds and think about what the person is saying. and frankly! to hand out rough judgement on some one whos grammer. who;s spelling is a bit suspect......IE! me being a prime example. doesnt make you look clever. it makes you appear shallow and nerdish. try thinking about the question and you might get more out of the game. but yea! your point is a good one. I would hate to be responcible for chasing some one away from contact with outher people just because i didnt take time to think before i gave an answere.

Perhaps YOU should stop trying to be the Yahoo Q&A police. You will not change things, and many of these questions have been repeated dozens of times and there are often underlying reasons why answers may be given that don't meet your own personal approval. NO, we have NO responsibility to anyone here. ANYONE who takes answers here with the thought that they are getting any kind of professional advice, NEEDS PROFESSIONAL HELP, and the must pay for that. This is for fun. Especially the Etiquette section in which ALL of the answers are subjective.
Sounds like you have some control issues.

Yes I totally agree with you. I can tell if a child has asked a question and always answer as if answering one of my own children. I would never allow my children on here, it can be vicious and dangerous not to mention some inappropriate responses from morons. Before I reply to any question I always decide in what vein to answer, am I going to be helpful, humourous, sarcastic etc. The answer is always in keeping with the sentiment of the question. A lot of people on here don't think before getting straight in there with any old answer like it's a conveyor belt and onto the next. I can remember a question from some poor soul who was suicidal and some idiot told them to just get on with it. These answers that encourage vulnerable people to harm themselves are the only time that I will report.

If it is an important ? that the asker seems serious about, then I think it definitely deserves a serious answer. However,,,,,,I answered a question earlier on the proper placing of your silverware after your done eating. Now, to me, worrying about where to "place" your knife and fork after eating is ridiculous. It seems like something rich people worry about. I was taught to chew with my mouth closed and not to talk with food in your mouth. That was the extent of my table manners etiquette. Just put the fork down and let that be that. I gave a kind of funny answer. Now, the asker was probably serious about her ? but being that it wasn't anything earth shattering, I felt comfortable giving my answer the way I did.

It does get annoying when the same annoying questions are asked over and over, so people tend to get rude. I spend most of my time in the pregnancy and parenting area, and every hour of every day, at least 10 people post "Am I pregnant?" Obviously no one can determine such a thing over the internet, but people wouldn't bother asking if they weren't scared and didn't need the reassurance.

I try to give all answers serious consideration. Every once in a while I'll answer a question with the sarcastic response that it merits, but if I sense that a question is *for real*, I answer as truthfully and helpfully as I can.
