Italy was ruled by dictator Benito Mussolini from 1922 to 1943. He joined in a tripartite pact with Germany and Japan soon called the "Axis."
When the Allies landed in Sicily in 1943 several Generals began secret negotiations with the allies. Meanwhile the fascist grand council at the behest of the King of Italy removed Mussolini from power. Benito was then imprisoned. The Italians attempted to quit the war and/or join the allies. However, the Germans rescued Mussolini from captivity and established a pro-axis government in northern Italy. So from late 1943 on there existed two Italian governments; one fighting for the Axis, the other for the allies.

Yes, the Italians, under the fascist leader al Deuce or other wise known as Benito Mussolini was the leader of Italy who tied it to the axis powers of Germany and Japan.
The fascist party was overthrown in 1943, Mussolini and his girlfriend were hung by their thumbs, or some such extremity.
It was at this point in time that Italy surrendered to the allies.

Yes, the Italians were part of the axis alliance. They were led by Benito Mussolini, a fascist. They surrendered after us English and the Yanks kicked them about a bit. Its said that Hitler stole most of his ideas of ruling from Mussolini's ruling, after all he did lead Italy through decades of power, and success. Mussolini was hung, along with his mistress, after they tried to flee when they knew the war was lost.
