The black wire should be the hot depending on who wired the place to begin with. The white wire is neutral. The bare wire is the ground. If you just have two wires from the new lamp then it is not going to be grounded. If the wires from the new lamp are not color coded, one of them should have ridges running the length of it, this is the neutral and goes to the white wire.
Then the plain wire of course goes to the black wire. Make sure the bare wire is then curled up very tight and left alone, or if you must, cut it off.

The two wires coming from the house is the + and -. Old homes didn't have a third wire " the ground". If you really want to ground this lamp. You have to drive a metal rod in the ground 3 feet deep and connect the third wire to it. Or do what I do and that is to buy a cheater plug that will plug the thing in without the ground connected.

Black is hot, white is return, and bare is ground. Hook the black and white wires in the lamp to the corresponding wires in the wall. Hook the bare wire to the junction box if it's metal. Otherwise, just roll it up and stuff it in the junction box.
