I use to work in the city and I had many people who ask me for money on any given day. One time someone ask me if I would give him money to breakfast? I told him, come with me and I will by you Mcdonalds. He looks at me like I just slapped him! He told me no and walked away?? I guess I know what he was going to do with the money he ask for huh? Has this ever happened to you?

Unfortunatly some of the homeless put themselves in that position for drugs booze and other things. But dont look at them all that way some of them honestly want something more and cant seem to get a head in life. Sure this is a free country tell the bums to get a job? But look at it this way are you gonna give a stinky filthy ratty clothed bum a job at your establishment? i think not.

I do as long as they dont look like crack heads or winos. I would hope that if I were put in the position of living on the streets with my kids, Someone would help. Its like a step in the right direction for some. What I mean is: Say you're on the street and you have lost all hope that anyone cares and its 20 degrees below zero and there is no shelter for you and your children, then some good soul hands you a blanket and 10 dollars to get something warm for the childrens tummys, that maybe would change the out look of the homeless person with the family.

I worked in Boston for 20+ years. There were homeless people everywhere you turned. I gave money to several every day. I know that some were really homeless and some were scammers, but I couldn't tell the difference. I was more fortunate than you on the few occasions that I offered to bring someone a meal or take them to a restaurant. The people I encountered were very grateful for my offer for food and none of them turned me down. I like to think that the number of people I have tried to help have out weighted the number of people that just scammed me or wanted money for drugs or alcohol.

Awhile back, my hubby and I bought a homeless guy breakfast at this diner. He was buying toast with some change....But what about the ones who hold up signs saying they'll work for food? Do you really think that they have any intentions of employing themselves out? duh, no. Or the ones that say they're just passin' thru, need help. Like it's a threat to stay if we don't pop em a fiver! Or the ones who dumpster dive an old wheelchair from behind the Salvation Army just to park it on the offramp with the Vet sign...and ending it with "God bless you". Ya know, if ya just held a sign up that said "need money for beer", I'd probably flip ya a buck or two!

Yes. It has unfortunately.

Some years ago, I gave this man $5 because he had a sign that says he was homeless and hungry. He walked with a slight limp. His attire was torn and dirty, and looked like he hadn't shaved in months.

10 mins after I gave him the money, I saw him again .... getting into a brand new Cadillac.

I took the license plate number down and called the police.

Now I think twice about giving the homeless money. I'd much rather buy them food. We live and we learn.

Yes, similiar situation going into a diner to buy him a cup of coffee.

Have I helped a homeless person?
Yes I voluntered with 3 friends to start a summer project to feed the homeless of Camden NJ. We began it July 21st 1979 and it is still going. I worked with it the first 3 years. I never thought the summer project would last that long.... I am even surprised to hear it is still going after all these years.

Yes. I don't know why they say this. I'm sure it varies, depending on the person. As terrible it is, some may be begging for money to buy drugs or alcohol rather than food. Others may just be too embarrassed to accept charity as personal as you offered. You did the right thing, though, and you shouldn't let this incident discourage you from being so kind in the future.

Homeless people are usually mentally ill or disabled. As for drug addicted homeless people, they suffer very painful side affects every day because of how they chose to live. I have empathy for these people too.
Immagine having noone who cares if you starve or freeze to death. Top that with a drug problem, helth problems, and finding some where to sleep. I don't blame people for not giving them money but I dont approve of people walking over them.

Yeah this has happened to me quite a few times. That's why when I'm feeling rather charitable I give money out to homeless mothers with children instead of some guy just looking to get high. But I mean, I guess if you're in the state that they're in you'd probably want to feel like you're flying more than starving, too... idk

You did the right thing. Sometimes they will buy booze or drugs with it. One time a man asked me for money & I said I will buy you lunch he said no. So I walked away. I will never figure people out.
