That's a close one! I really like Jimmie (though he's not one of my FAVORITE drivers), and I almost NEVER root for Smoke.
That said- Smoke by a nose.

Considering that they are both on great teams and have arguably the 2 best crew chiefs in the business I would say the edge goes to Jimmie Johnson, if you are talking about who's the best driver in the Nextel Cup Series. Maybe Tony is a slighty better overall driver if they were to be compared across the board in different types of cars but Jimmie's stats are better than Tony's and he has also shown better consistency year in and year out. Jimmie has been racing full time in the cup series for 3 years less than Smoke but is only 3 wins behind him. He has never finished worse than 5th, made EVERY chase, has more wins, top 5s and top 10s than Stewart since they have been racing heads up. Smoke is a great competitor and has all the driving ability you could ask for but Jimmie takes much better care of his equipment and knows how to close the deal when it is go time. When saying who the better driver is you have to factor in race management and the possessing the patience necessary to give yourself the opportunity to finish the race with at least a chance to win.

Those are two of my three favorite drivers, but I always want Tony to come out on top. I personally think it's more exciting to watch Tony and Jeff Gordon race each other... Talk about Talent!!! But Tony is by far the best when they all have good cars. Next year will be a challenge when Tony has to drive a crappy Camry though. I don't think he'll be able to run a good race, and that is sad.

Both are very good drivers but Tony is more of a total package he can win at any track anytime and Jimmie still has a little to learn but he is a fast learner and is probably going to help Junior allot next year it just seems that when Hendrick's get a new driver they bring out the best in them. So it will be interesting to see.

Most definitely Tony Stewart. Yea, he does have a temper, but do ya really think he's the only one?? If he was a "dirty driver" he would of taken out Gordon at Talladega. The way I saw it, he pushed Jeff to the win and I'm glad he did. Johnson has had his share of shady moves too, a lot of them involved Gordon. Johnson is not the clean driver y'all think he is. I'd rather watch Stewart & Gordon. Now that is a great match of talent.

if there are two drivers that have the same talent level these two are very close.
I think Stewart has the edge as a better driver but Johnson is closing in fast.

I think Tony and Jeff are more exciting to watch. I think Tony is the better driver. He has championships in more than just NASCAR. He can flat out drive the wheels off of anything.

Both are amazing drivers. I'd rather see Tony win out of the two, but Jimmie is also a very talented driver...
