If so, what action would you take?

The main reason I ask this question is because of some of the responses I received on another question:

I guess I should also add that I smoked for many years (started when I was a teenager) and quit cold turkey a few years ago. I wouldn't have smoked if not given the oppertunity... I would get my cigarettes from an older friend whose parents let her smoke!

Yes
Make sure there wasn't smokes in the house for starters. Then make sure there was no MONEY available for them. Buy some videos about smoking and what it does to you. I am a SMOKER and I HATE IT! I wish I could stop. It's an addiction! I wish I'd never started. Take a trip to the hospital to the LUNG section if the videos/cds don't help. Lots of websites about smoking as well. However I must say that ALOT of teens feel it's cool because OTHERS around them are doing it. (check out the teens friends and you'll see I'm correct)
Have a look here:
http://www.teendrugabuse.us/teensmoking.html
http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/drug_alcohol/tobacco/smoking.html (this one is horrible) Good one for your teen to look at.

Would I want to know? ABSOLUTELY.
It is so proven, left & right, that kids that start smoking cigarettes turn to heavier things much more quickly and much more often than non-smokers.
In high school, those kids out there smoking usually hang together, and lets be honest, they arent the best influence for your child.
Be a good parent, not a good friend, and help your child find a healthier path.
Good luck!

Our family has mixed feelings on this. My husband smokes, and he smoked in high school. He says it is inevitable that our daughter will at least try it. As for me, I never want her to. If she ever once used her allowance money to buy cigarettes, she would never see another penny of allowance from me.

The disappointment would just be so huge. I would throw away any cigarettes I found, as well as her lighter... probably ground her for awhile... but I think most of all I would just feel hurt and like a failure as a parent.

I would be able to tell without asking by his stench. And yes I would want to know so I could wring his neck. That said if I caught him smoking he'd be grounded for 1 month(church and school only), and he would start paying half of all households bills since it would seem he has money to burn, he would also be set up with a lung cancer patient and a person who is on oxygen b/c they can no longer breathe properly on their own for a serious look at what smoking does. He would also start paying for his own dr appts and asthama meds. b/c I don't have money to waste on his lung health if he's going to be smoking.

I would definitely want to know. I never smoked, both my parents were smokers and I got so tired of the house, my clothes and hair smelling like smoke. I vowed never to smoke. My son tried it once but smoking made him cough and smelled up his car. He not only doesn't smoke, he bans smoking in his car and in his apt. Adults that buy teens cig. should be fined big time.

Why on earth wouldnt I want to know?

If my son were smoking it would be because he obviously had too much free time, and too loose a leash, and not enough one on one time with me parenting him. And obviously some issues with his heart and head that would make him think it was even remotely acceptable.

We live by higher standards and morals in this family, I expect him to be proud of his body, and to take care of it, NOT to put garbage in it, or do garbagy things with it.
