Im talking about ear plugs--after a while one ear plug just stops working

The wires to the ear plugs are very thin the make them flexible. This also makes them weak. It would be rare for both wires to break at the same time, so one breaks first and you stop using the ear plugs. If it's mostly the same (left or right) ear plug you are doing something in the way you handle the ear plugs that puts more stress on that particular ear plug.

The wiring going to the earplugs take quite a beating...and over time are victim to breakage. A lot of times you can take them apart and resolder the connections. Unless you have an expensive set, throw them out and buy new ones.
