BMI just the same way as scale are irrelevant numbers - they dont tell you how much muscle or body fat percentage you have which is what really matters
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter your stats and find out how much you need to maintain or lose weight.
if it shows only how much you need for maintenance take off 400-600cal and you will lose eating that much.

A. Your weight in pounds: _____
B. Multiply A by 12 to get your basic calorie needs: _____
C. Multiply B by 1.6 to estimate your resting metabolic rate (calorie burn without factoring in exercise): _____
D. Strength training: Multiply the number of minutes you lift weights per week by 5: _____
E. Aerobic training: Multiply the number of minutes per week that you run, cycle, and play sports by 8: _____
F. Add D and E, and divide by 7: _____
G. Add C and F to get your daily calorie needs: _____
H. Add 500 to G: _____. This is your estimated daily calorie needs to gain 1 pound a week.

Originally this formula is designed to GAIN weight...since your goal is to lose weight you should take the number in letter G and eat below that.

The equation is simple. To lose weight: burn more calories than you intake...to gain weight: eat more calories than you burn
