looking for attention...

In training they call this the "over-shake." You may have trained your dog that if she gives you her paw you will pet her and praise her. Now it's a method of getting attention and can also be a dominance issue, as dogs will put a leg over another to prove its dominance. The best bet to stop her is to just ignore her when she does it, do not yell or punish because that is still attention even if its bad attention and therefore in her eyes may still be rewarding. If you feel she may be wanting attention, give it to her before she shakes so she realises that she doesn't need to try so hard to be noticed

Have you shown her how to shake. My dog knows the shake command. It's a word command you can give your dog and when given he/she will put his/her paw in your hand.

it could be training.. or attention seeking.. or maybe it happens when you seem upset or depressed and thinks you need attention.. dogs are great senses of emotion.. so are cats

she's trying to shake your hand or she wants you to hold her paw. that's what our male pit does. he loves for us to hold his paw. i don't get it, but it makes him happy.
