The U.S. Army effectively turned me down as a Canadian, and I have since given up on the idea. If you must find out for yourself, email a U.S. Army cyber recruiter like I did. They will quickly respond by telling you they will take you if you have a Green Card, but by law, the U.S. Army cannot help you get a Green Card.
INS won't just give you a Green Card, and you would have to get one after getting a visa through employer sponsorship, which only can happen if you apply for a job lacking qualified Americans. The Green Card Lottery doesn't apply to Canada because Canada has already sent a lot of immigrants.
When I tried to join the U.S. Army, Canada had had few casualties in Afghanistan, so I could have argued that the U.S. could have used me more. To date, Canada has suffered 71 dead, which proportionately for the U.S. would be like 710 dead, so things have changed. If you want to help both the Canadian troops and the U.S. troops, you should join the Canadian Army and go to Afghanistan.
The British Army does take very small number of recruits from Commonwealth countries like Canada because Canada is still legally attached to Britain because the Queen of England is Canada's head of state.
I also asked 2 Yahoo questions about it which you can refer to.

Go to an enlistment office. Most large cities have them. You will become a US citizen when you enlist. As long as you are a legal immigrant. I don't know what the exact procedure is but an ex-boyfriend was in the same situation and now he is a US citizen.

I'm pretty sure you just have to apply for citizenship. you don't have to be a citizen, and you don't have to be a resident alien. You can go to www.marines.com and send them an email inquiry.
AND they'll pay you up to $40,000 to do it!!!!
Good luck
added later - whoa there are a LOT of bitter military haters here. Fact is, you DON'T have to be a citizen to join the military, you just have to have applied for citizenship. Don't you haters read or listen to the news? Bush 43 is granting citizenship to all non-citizen soldiers who serve honorably and serve in Iraq or Afganistan. Lots of these people answering your post wouldn't serve in the military even if we were being invaded so don't let them talk you out of what you are thinking about. It's an honorable thing. And now a days, you don't have to give up your Canadian citizenship either (my brother in law and wife hold their US and English passports)
whoa, mean and hateful

When I joined the U.S. Navy years ago, I was one of many who were non-citizens of the U.S. I was never interested in finding out why they took me in. Talk to a recruiter and find out.

Call a recruiter to find out. I would think that you would have to become a US citizen.
