God is more important... but you should still be able to call your family and tell them how you are doing... its not that time consuming...

They shouldn't be forbidden to do it. The reason they are, is that they have too many problems with missionaries spending all their time calling home. They get overwelmingly homesick and decide to come home.

LdS missionaries are supposed to write home every week. In developed countries they can even email home once a week. Under special circumstances missionaries are even allowed to phone home.

Phone calls are expensive - especially international calls. I would easily spend $100 every time I phoned home (Brazil to USA). Many missionaries are in different time zones than their parents (my mission was 5 hours ahead of my home), so missionaries might have to break mission rules regarding bedtime in order to call their families at a decent hour. Not all missionaries have phones in their apartments. On my mission, we found a member in each area which would let us call home collect. Doing this more than twice a year could become a burden on the kind members.

Above all else, when a missionary talks with his family, he will get "trunky" for a few days and not have his mind on the Lord's work.

Those answers given, are very much to the point. It is to keep the Missionary from looking back over his or her shoulder for home.

There are those which get out into the "mission field" which change their minds, and ask them selves the question "why did I do this"? A percentage of them will fail to continue to believe all they have been "brain washed with". After all few have been away from home and there are over powering forces at work "WHEN YOU GO ON YOUR MISSION"... it is not always a case of if you choose to and feel the call to go. Many are almost forced out as soon as possible after high school or just a couple of years of college. The youth full mind is a commodity the Church uses increase church membership. Sadly it must be added "membership" equates to monetary income.

Thus limit the amount of home or contact with the news media, or anything which will divert the person's mind from "converting " new members.

It is a little strict in my opinion...another thing that I've wondered at is why the church would encourage missionaries to remain in the field and not fly home to attend the funeral of immediate family members who died suddenly when the missionary was away. It's stuff like this that makes people label the LDS church as a cult.

Maybe hearing a mother's voice makes them too homesick and so they forbid it, i had a missionary who left the field three months into his mission, but it had nothing to do with caling home, he was just too clingy and a leach and wanted to get married before completing his mission. I was a nanny and told him I was going to complete my contract. This is also the contridiction with the church, the church is family oriented, but they have their church calling that mya take them away from their family as well.

They are encouraged to write home at least once a week. Some write short letters every day. Alot I know use the internet (email) on their P-days.

But like the poster above me. It's because they were becoming overly involved with what was happening at home.

It has to do with the same reason Elders find a family in the ward that loves them and always want them over to "hoot" as we called it on our mission. You spend so much time over there instead of doing your calling which is to preach and teach the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. I did have one companion who's mom was a non member and she said he couldn't go unless he called weekly. He was given permission to call weekly but he didn't let it distract him.

They are allowed to write all the letters they can. Writing is much better, because letters can be saved and archived into a journal.

Phone calls can lead to much homesickness.

Because they are busy in the work. Now maybe you can answer this...Why do they need to call home more than twice?
