The condemned criminal, Barabbas

2007-10-12 12:20:52 · answer #1 · answered by Veritas 7 · 2 0

Barabbas. He was a rebel who had killed some of the Roman soldiers, and was arrested, and was awaiting execution when Jesus was arrested, and was being asked by the Jews for Pilate to hand Jesus over for crucifixion, and to let Barabbas go free instead.

Actually, if you want to put it more personally, we are the ones who were set free, by Christ going to the Cross. For we are the ones who deserved to be punished with the sentence of death for our sins against God. It is only with the Blood of Christ that we are made righteous to stand before a HOLY God.

The name you are looking for is Barabbas- but something just hit me as I read your question- there are men and women every day, still being set free, because Jesus went to the Cross

According to the Pope's book on the Life of Jesus, you can translate his name into bar-abbas - i.e. the son of the Father. He was a rebel, and in effect was seen as fulfilling the idea that the Jews had of the Messiah - he would be a king who would free them from oppression.

But instead, Christ was the king of another realm - the spiritual, not the earthly.

So you had the "son of the father" offering salvation in this world, versus the Son of Man offering salvation in the next. They chose to free the man who offered them worldly salvation, rather than eternal salvation.

As Christians, we need to ask ourselves truthfully who we would cheer for to be released.
