Like people have said it is short for fundamentalist, it is often intended as an insult, and has come to mean a narrow minded bigot.

But an insult is only such if it is taken as one. As someone who has been made spiritually alive by Christ I take it as a compliment. For me, a fundamentalist is someone who holds to the fundamentals of their faith.

So a fundamentalist atheist blocks out any inkling they might have that there is a God (don't think there's many of them!).

A fundamentalist Muslim seems to take on a murderous intent, or at least a desire to see Islam dominate the political sphere and suppress all else.

As a fundamentalist Christian however I hold to Christ's summary of God's law: what he demands of us- that we love him and love others. The fact that we don't do that perfectly means we face his condemnation- but in Christ, God has satisfied his wrath and provided a way that we might be in a restored relationship to God as our heavenly Father, who will take us to be with him in glory.

A fundamentalist atheist (certainly your old school commie!) might want to suppress all religion. Similarly a fundamentalist Muslim (certainly the Wahabites) might want you to convert or die.

But I as a fundamentalist Christian simply want to tell you how you can have peace with God: if you refuse it I will leave you be but continue to pray to Almighty God to work a miracle in your life.

As a fundamentalist Christian I am part of God's heavenly kingdom which will last for eternity. But I can live perfectly well with a clear conscience in a postmodern context (proclaiming the truth in a relativistic culture), under an atheistic regime or under an Islamic government (I am happy to die for the One who died for me and if that is the price for telling others about Him: so be it- at least God will have proved my faith to be genuine!).

Peace/Shalom/Salaam

In the case of a "Fundie" from the aspect of this forum, they are using that term to poke fun of those who are Fundamentalist Christians.

But, I'm very thankful to be a Fundie. I have a wonderful God who is there for me. And it's a choice that anyone can make or choose to reject.

I am a fundie. People use it to insult us, but it doesn't work because I believe that the fundamentals of the faith remain today as much as they have for 2000 years and in the end God will prove His Word to be true, every letter of it.

What is a fundie?
Fundies are arrogant people who think they are saved. They like quoting scriptures out of context.

Is it an insult to religious people?
Actually, they like insulting people.

A fundie is a very conservative person. It shouldn't be an insult but somehow, it has evolved into an insulting term.

Yes, it is an insult by the ones here who use it to label us. It presumes that those of us who follow the bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ are somehow back-woodsy, stupid, uneducated, and have no objectivity.

That is all wrong. When you believe in something as wonderful as the salvation that Jesus gave us, and you want others to hear the truth of Him, you get labelled a Fundie (short for fundamentalist).

But, someday everyone who mocks God, Jesus and His church, will have to anwer for all that. I hope they seek Him before it is too late.
