Because people are idiots.
People have to jump on the "omg it is teh bad" bandwagon. How many deaths have been recorded being directly linked to marijuana usage?
Line that figure up against alcohol and/or tobacco.
Why do people do absolutely anything to survive? They will take any disability with a smile as long as they live, but as soon as it comes down to drugs, they all of a sudden do a complete 360.
Oh p.s, I am 20 years old and I smoke pot regularly, and have for a number of years. I earn almost $50,000 per year, I speak English, Arabic and am learning Korean. I am more successful that most people I went to high school with. Most of which who are regular drinkers.

I think it depends on what you mean by "high" , if you mean getting high by smoking pot, I think people look down on it because it is illegal. But the thing about pot is, many people smoke it. Even people you don't think do it...sometimes do.
Schooling has nothing to do with it. I smoked pot all through college and graduate school and I still graduated with top honors. I have a doctor who actually sold pot to pay for medical school. Many professionals smoke it. As a matter of fact the older I get the more I am beginning to believe that more people do it than they would have you believe. Not everyone who smokes pot becomes stupid. Just the one's that were stupid to begin with.
However, it's not good to get high to get rid of emotional problems. But if it's in the comfort of your own home, and your just using it to relax, I don't see what the problem is.
Now if your doing hard core drugs that's not good at all.

it's looked down upon because instead of working through your problems, you are relying on a drug to forget about them temporarily. you don't have to go to therapy to work through emotional problems, but if they are so bad that you need to escape with drugs then you are probably headed down a dangerous road.
getting high is probaby more fun when you are young and don't have too much responsibility, but if you want to go to college and get a decent job, getting high will interfere with getting your homework done. if you have an important job, you can't be high out in public because a coworker might see you acting like an idiot. and you may not even act like an idiot out in public, but there are a lot of high people i've run into out and about the town and they usually come across as out of it and a little dumb.
getting high can be recreational, just like having a few beers is, but when you're getting trashed all of the time to get away from dealing with your deep dark personal issues, you might want to watch out for that. that's what breeds addicts. (and a lot of people look down upon those who give up and refuse to deal with their problems in a more productive way)

It depends on what you do moron no offense. Some people are addicted to their job running good healthy things like sex.
But if you like to get high to wind down that's OK as long as its an occasional joint or beer. Getting high as a physical or emotional addiction is a sign of weakness especially if its crank or tweeker type drugs so good luck and find a healthy way to get high.

I don't look down on getting high. One of the most quality experiences you can have in life is to expand your mind. Here's what the Byrds have to say about it:
Eight miles high and when you touch down
You’ll find that it’s stranger than known

Because it's a self indulgent way of handling your problems that also contributes to crime.
That's my gut reaction to people who use on a regular basis... that they're self indulgent and I prefer not to be around them most of the time.

I hope you're talking about pot. If you are, I firmly believe that it is a healing plant and not a drug. I wouldn't care if alcohol was outlawed if the government would legalize it. You don't need rehab for smoking marijuana.

Just by asking you answered your own question. Getting high is a easy way to see what the inside of a jail cell looks like, or a treatment center, and besides frying your brain,it will take your money, your future and maybe your life. Don't Do Drugs!!!

Maybe cuz sooner or later, when the tolerance builds up enough, you end up feeling pretty low...or if you do too much, you might find yourself looking up from the floor at someone...

Well, when you are addicted or your life goes to pot (pun not intended) while thinking only about your next high, and you flunk out of school or lose your job and end up on the streets or worse, then you will know why getting high is looked down on. Enjoy.
