Many antropoligsts feel that religion helps humans explain things that are not readily explainable - like in olden times: the weather, floods, sickness, disease, earthquakes, etc.
We all like to feel that there is a "plan" behind everything that happens.
As time has gone on, we have discovered many more science-based explanations for the things noted above. Still, for any particular person, there are probably some things they don't understand. Thus such beliefs can give them comfort.
The main objection I have to some people is a) when they try to push their belief system on someone else, and b) when they use their religion as a support for their hatreds. To me, this isn't religion, but bigotry.

Well first of all too many people confuse God and Jesus. Jesus is the promised Messiah but he is not God and he is not to be worshiped God does not change!!! God is the the Creator. The bible has been rewritten too many times and I've learned over the years any thing from God comes with PROOF!!! Just believing isn't enough! Know what you are believing in!!! The bible has things in it that is true but mostly false. The Christians only follow what they feel is right what they feel they can do with out too much work and instead of fitting the religion they try to fit their lives around it. True somethings that Jesus did other Prophets did as well, such as raise the dead Mose did that before Jesus...
God is real and He test those He love!!!
Worship God and none else and you'll do just fine.
Question: Do you not believe in God? If not why? Did you ever? What made you stop? If you do believe in God what do you really believe???
The key to Ignorance is Knowledge!!!
Sorry for any misspelled words.

To understand why man believes in God is the problem, The Religious Leaders have so corrupted mans thinking and have caused mass confusion with their lies, that no wonder there is a played out feeling, but not from God's side of the issue.
To use the scriptures with honesty and see that they are in harmony with each other is the important part of understanding God's purpose for the earth and mankind. To know that we can have the opportunity to live on earth forever should motivate us to study to find the answers and the truth. By asking questions and getting scriptural answers builds faith. The faith causes us to do the work by teaching others the truths of God's word, which is life saving.
See John 17:3, an 2 Timothy 3:16
Our faith and works are commanded of us if we want everlasting life on earth. Mathew 28:18,19

It's because the IDEA of Jesus is cool. The natural human instinct is to protect oneself, to prevent, avoid, fight, outmaneuver and overpower potential threats to survival. But even the most secure, resource-rich person dies. And my "winning" usually means "losing" for someone else.
Our ignorance, impotence and mortality keep us from achieving our dreams. A being who did not have such limitations could overcome every obstacle. But such a being would need to feel compassion for those of us who did. Surely such a being would come down and show us how to transcend our limitations and achieve our true potential.
This notion, in various forms, has inspired humanity for millennia. It is the fervent wish, the persistent ideal of us all. But it is an abstract, unrealized idea. For some people, only a concrete idea will do. So they give it a name: Osiris, Tammuz, Dionysius, Jesus. They give it a background story, make it real, so that people can be inspired to reach beyond self-preservation to cooperative, altruistic effort, to understand that there are things more important than even personal survival: justice, peace, honesty, respect, etc.
But there is a danger in making an idea too "real", too material. Some people misunderstand and take the story literally. It's no longer about Christ the transcendent model, but about Jesus my personal hero. People no longer try to emulate the model. They simply wait for God to do it and cheer him on like fanatics. And social reform grinds to a halt and reverts to the same old system of haves and have-nots, with a new cast of characters.
The idea is still good, but the powers that be are also good at subverting and trivializing the message. Still, people try because the goal is worthy.

Yeah, I'm not a top contributor yet but I have to tell you that you wording was messed up and so is your idea that God is played out. The only reason your first answerer said your wording was fine is because you are in harmony with his delusion. When God gets played out the sun won't shine, the grass won't grow, people will no longer breathe. There will be no more food to eat, no more children born, no more life on Earth. Your knowledge of World Religion is lacking something. What could it be? I know, knowledge.

First most of your assumptions about the purpose of the Bible are wrong. Second, God is not played out. Statistically, most scientists and science students, both today and in the past, believe in God. Belief in God has never been an obstacle to many great men and women, rather it has been a positive.
Also, look at the world. No one is fighting over religion - that is a fake excuse. Power hungry individuals, who really have no or very little faith in God, use religion as a tool to control naive followers. What the world fights over is power, money, land , and resources.

Hi Bella,
All we have to get us through this world is our faith. Either we choose to believe in a higher divine power or we choose faith in something else. I can't conceive in my mind that we all got here by blind chance.
I see moral order in our world, creation and our Universe at large. There must be a God somewhere. My faith reaches up to God. I cling to the promises contain in his Holy word that speaks about him. I believe that Jesus came and died on a Cross for my sins, foolishness, and rebellious nature. He died for the Sins of the world. He will return a second time to save his people from their sins as the Holy Bible declares.
Bella, God is not played out. He is not some fairytale. He is not a theory of some kind. He is not a figment of our imagination. God is as real today as you are real. He created the intricate details of your mind with a fine delicate balance between life and death. No room for error. No margin of error in your development. Only God could have done this masterful job by his power. Make no mistake about this. Don't allow yourself to be duped by false theories that discredits faith in God.

THIS....
*****
Isis had Osiris' body returned to Egypt after his death; Set had retrieved the body of Osiris and dismembered it into 14 pieces which she scattered all over Egypt. Thus Isis went out to search for each piece which she then buried. This is why there are many tombs to Osiris. The only part she did not find in her search was the genitals of Osiris which were thrown into a river by Set. She fashioned a substitute penis after seeing the condition it was in once she had found it and proceeded to have intercourse with the dead Osiris which resulted in the conception of Horus the child.

You should read the book "By This Name" by John Cross. Go to www.goodseed.com. It costs about $12 Canadian I think. It explains the importance of the Bible and actually compares it to the Egyptian religion. I think you would be interested. I've just started reading it and I find it quite interesting. It makes the Bible more understandable.

The bottom line is because God wanted me. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to those who trust Him at the end of John 15, and in the midst of John 16. I can tell you that He delivered on His promise.
That's why I believe. He wanted me to believe, I responded, and He gave me the Holy Spirit.
