On Oprah the other day, Dr. Mehmet Oz said that the best thing we can eat is fiber. I wanna know what's better, grains or veggies/fruits? Sometimes I either don't have or don't want grains, and prefer veggies and fruits instead. Is this okay, or would grains be a better source of fiber than produce? Does it matter - is it a toss up between grains and produce? What's the scoop? Any and all information is most welcome, thanx.

We get most of dietary fiber from fruit and veggies because they have more of it.
There are "fiber fortified" foods like cereals and bread which are good as well but if you choose those look for ones that are whole grain and not "made WITH whole grain".
All of them are good and necessary for our bodies - fruit and veggies will add more vitamins and minerals while grains (complex carbs) will give you energy.
If you dont get enough dietary fiber from food (25-35g a day) you can add more from psyllium husk you can get in health food store.

I think you can probably get better overall nutrition if you eat some fresh fruit and one very large raw veggie salad a day. I am not a nutritoinish, but I pay careful attention to our diet and the quality of the food we eat. You can make cream of vegetable soups and freeze them for future use. Everything should be in moderation.
Never eat white bread. Go with oatmeal or rye bread - as whole grain as possible - and you should be fine. You can get cholesterol lowering benefits from oat meal and oat bran.

I lived with my Grandmother for 20 years. She was a Registered nurse and certified nutritionist for most of 45 years. She was always pushing literature pertaining to nutrition on me.Besides that she was constantly preaching to me that the most palatable means of obtaining the fiber we need is from fruits and vegetables.I also gathered this from the books ,journals, and pamphlets she kept me supplied with. Not that they are really any better than grains. But she always saved most of her grains to feed the chickens and other animals around.I suppose the answer is a toss up, but I would much prefer getting my necessary nutrients from fresh fruit and vegetables.

grains would be the best source of fiber usually, but if you want to consider a raw foods diet that would be healthy. you basically want to have plenty of the nutrients for a healthy colon. if you have a healthy colon then you will live longer.
