Why it can be a lot of stuff. The most common would be just a common cold causing mucus to drip on the back of your throat, it could also be acid reflux (acid from your stomach coming up and burn/irritating your throat), or the worse of the three, pulmonary edema (fluid in your lungs, from left-sided congestive heart failure, or pulmonary infection) Other signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure would be waking up out of breath in the middle of the night, swelling in your lower extremities, and/or something called Juglar Veinus Destention, which pretty much means your neck veins pop out. If you have one or more of these symptoms, I recommend you go see your doctor as soon as possible, as this can be pretty serious.

It could be congestion, irritations, or any of a number of other things.... but there is enough possibilities of what it could be that you should really check with your doctor if it's bothering you. Good luck!
