Depends on the context of the word, it could go either way. A word like unique is a word that really doesn't have a positive or negative conotation on its own. A word like Beautiful is usually positive and Ugly is negative but Unique isn't that simple. So you have take the rest of the sentence into consideration and the situation in which it was said.

Let's say you were doing a project for a class and you took a different approach than the rest of the class and came up with a really good presentation that was different than everybody else's, somebody might say that you had a unique approach that was very impressive. That would be positive.

Now let's say that somebody says "I am so fortunate to know you. You're not like everybody else. You are so unique" That's also positive

But now let's say that you work in an office where everybody wears dark suits and is clean cut but you have purple hair and wear clothing held together by safety pins and big chunky boots. You don't fit the norm in that office and somebody may say "Yeah that's so and so. They are very...um...unique."

Give the way it was said more value than the word itself and you'll have a better idea of what the person was intending to get across.

Weird question!! Is it a compliment when they say that your ugliness or stupidity is unique?

Sorry to those above. Unique means there is nobody else like you. It does not only apply to good things about a person. Where do you get that idea from.

Hitler was unique

I would rather be told I'm unique than told that I'm like everyone else. I see the former as the best compliment, and the latter as the worst insult.

If u get told by someone that your unique and they arent pissed at you then it is the best compliment because he's saying that you are a special person to him

Well thinking that would depend on the context to what it refferred. Unique meaning so messed up noone counld possibly be like you? Don't think so. Unique in the sence that you are to special to be compared to others, yes.
