BECAUSE IT"S A PHONE! NOT A CAMERA! If I put a lens on a banana , it's still a banana. It is not a camera. It's a gimmick to separate you from your money, and the sheep walk to the slaughter.

Camera phones are pretty much webcams. No effort has been put into the imaging technology because they are really there for fun rather than business. The reason they make people look "ugly" is beacuse they are usually held close to the person while taking the picture. A proper portrait is taken on a camera that is quite a few meters away from the person. Up close just makes your nose look bigger etc.
As far as image quality - it has nothing to do with pixel count. It's because the imaging software in the phone isn't designed to do a good job. It also compresses the image quality quite a lot to make the image small file size. Another thing, the lens is very small and being that small, it would cost too much to make it precise as to give a good image without distortion.

They produce images that have lower resolution, and have little image processing capability. It is hilarious to me that some people expect to get great pictures from a phone and that someone even thought to put a camera on a phone in the first place. One has nothing at all to do with the other. A camera phone takes pictures good enough to be picture mailed to someone and often look good on a one and a half inch screen. If you want better pictures, buy an actual camera. If you want to call someone, use the phone.

Because they are usually of a very low pixel count, have a poor lens, are very prone to camera shake, have pathetic flashes (if at all), have no provision for altering the white balance (which affects the colour of the picture taken). Need I go on. In my view a camera is a camera and a phone is a phone. Whoever decided it was a good idea to combine the two needs his/her head examining. But then, I'm just a sweet old fashioned thing.

because they have low pixel numbers. Depending on how many pixels your camera phone has, the more the better.
