Im starting to do indoor and outdoor portraits. And I would like to know (if there is anyone out there) what type of lens would be best for this type of work.

The absolute best choice for portraiture is the Minolta 85mm f1.4 G (D) AF lens. Awesome bokeh and just a little soft wide-open and that is usually flattering to your subject. Not a zoom but a true portrait lens.Excellent for low-light applications.

This depends on your resources. If you ask me, a great lens to use is a fast prime or macro at between 70 and 90mm in length, with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Those lengths are often referred to as portrait lengths. Having a fast aperture will aid in lower light conditions, or when a shallow DoF is desired. You can however use any lens at those focal lengths, whether slower or a zoom. That variety is the best. I've taken great portraits with my 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The lens that is often kited with your brand camera would do fine actually (35-80mm f/4-5.6 macro). 90mm would be better, but rather than spending more money than you have to, if you have that lens just use it and see what you get. Choose 80mm and an aperture of f/6.3. You may be surprised. If you either don't have that lens, or you don't want to use it, just find yourself a good 85mm prime. Primes are usually faster than zooms and if you find an older one you could save some money. Good luck.

For portraits you need a lens of about 90mm focal lens (on a 35mm camera). This is thought to be the ultimate to give a pleasing rendition of the human face without distortion. Whether you can get one these days for your camera, I don't know. You may be able to find a zoom which covers that focal length,
