"This is the essence of Mary’s promise. To those who piously wear the Scapular she will grant either final perseverance in the state of grace or the grace of final contrition. It must be added that she will not grant the gift of final repentance to obstinate sinners who sacrilegiously use the scapular as an excuse for sin. Such unfortunate souls invariably, at one point, rid themselves of the holy garment and die without the consolation of its promise."
The above was found at www.catholicism.org regarding wearing the Brown Scapular. You can ask me to pray for you, but I can't grant you "final perseverance in the state of grace" or "the grace of final contrition". Sorry.
Four Popes have also confirmed that people who wear the Scapular and fulfill the other requirements of prayer, etc, will be released from Purgatory by Our Lady the Saturday after they die. Can't do that for anybody either, so the intercessory prayers to Mary are quite different from asking congregations to pray and intercede.

As I see it, it's because Mary has died and gone to Heaven. Praying to her is a type of sorcery at worst and consulting a familiar spirit at best. Both Sorcery and consulting familiar spirits is a sin.

One definition of sorcery I found is:
sorcery:
Use of supernatural power over others through the assistance of spirits.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, (11) or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. (12) For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh: and because of these abominations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't remember any precedent in the Bible to pray to Mary or any other dead person that is approved of. I do remember verses that say Jesus intercedes for us. I do remember verses that show prayer to dead people, but not favorably.

Edit: CJ - I think you're right. I learned what "necromancy" means today after seeing your post and looking it up.

For one thing praying to the dead is contrary to the Bible. But besides that, what is implied about praying to Mary? How can Mary hear all those prayers. Catholics treat Mary as a goddess in doing so.

In calling up Samuel from the dead through the witch of Endor, Samuel said, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" Why disturb the dead? Why behave as mediums? Let them rest in peace.

Because the New Testament tells us that Jesus intercedes for us when we Christians pray to God. When we pray for someone at our congregation or at home, we are praying in Jesus name, not in Mary's, since He is the interceder. Mary was his mother but has no intercession abilities and is just an idol.

The circular reasoning which leads to the idea of Mary being the mother of God is wrong. Scri[pture does no support her or any other alleged saint as any sort of go-between.

By the way, she is dead and buried.

Jesus, on the other hand, is alive and sits at the right hand of the Father. He is the only Mediator between God and man. That is scriptural.

To ask someone to pray for you is asking a living saint to support you in prayer - not like the theory of Jesus listening to His mother. Saints who have passed on do not hear our prayers - God is perfectly capable of hearing all of our prayers.

I've been praying to Mary for as long as I can remember. I'll never stop praying for her to intercede for me. I also pray to St. Jude for hopeless cases. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Because it doesn't say anywhere in the Bible to pray to Mary, she was just a human who God chose to give birth to His son Jesus. But it does say in the Bible to pray for one another to God in the name of Jesus.
If you read the Bible you'll see.

We don't pray TO Mary. We ask Mary to pray TO GOD and TO JESUS on our behalf. The angels bear our prayers to God's throne and the saints offer their prayers to God for us. Tob 12:12 In praying to God, we say, "Have mercy on us," but to the saints we ask, "Pray for us."

We can and do pray directly to Jesus and to God. Asking the saints to pray for us is no different than asking your friends and family to pray for you, except that they are more helpful because are pure and holy in heaven with the Lord.

The angels and saints do hear us and are aware of our activities.

because Mary is a sinner and cant help you

If the congregation is praying they better be praying to Jesus. Only he can help.

Mary is no better then Hitler. They both had to get saved to get to heaven. Hope mary did doubt hitler did.

the bible says we all are sinners. all the same. Mary just as righteous as Stalin or Osama or Saddam Hussein or Jeffrey Dahmner. A sinner sins. They need Jesus or they go to hell. She isn't Jesus mom she is the mother of the container he entered.

Getting thumbs down for Jesus sake....standing for the truth
