Because they don't realize that NOT ALL STEM CELL RESEARCH IS DERIVED FROM ABORTED FETUSES!!!
They are too caught up to realize that other things can be used as well. It's sad really...
While it would be great to do research on "aborted" fetuses (serving a greater purpose curing people...), that is what they have the problem with. They don't realize that these fetuses will go IN THE TRASH CAN anyways...so WHY would you not want to harvest them to HELP people!?!?!
They see it as an excuse to "commit murder".
Both reasons are ridiculous...and most of them haven't done their own research to realize that stem cell research will SAVE people...possibly even themselves.

The dignity of human life is and always has been and always should be a concern of all religions.
Christians like me are not opposed to ALL forms of stem cell research. We heartily approve of "adult" stem-cell research, in which viable cells are harvested from living people without killing them. These are already successfully used in a surprising number of medical treatment protocols.
One source is umbilical cord blood. Gallons of that stuff is THROWN AWAY in every hospital that delivers babies, every single day. And it's a terrible shame because people really could be healed.
Christians like me oppose embryonic stem cell research for two reasons. First, it destroys the human embryo, which is a human being. Second, absolutely NO viable treatments have come from embryonic stem cell research -- why keep barking up that tree when we have oodles of viable stem cells available to us through umbilical cord blood -- cells that are PROVEN to work. Third, the process by which the embryos are formed and prepared for harvest is inhumane and denies the embryos the dignity that a culture that says "All men are created equal" should be offering.

Not being a religion expert, I believe it is due to the "sanctity of life", which is same term used by those against abortions. Most practicing Christians believe that life begins at conception. Since stem cell involves the use of human cells created for the study_and already proven benefits_in the search for cures for illnesses such as alzheimers, Christians believe this is not right.

I don't like the generalization that you make (what do "Christians" believe), but I'll tell you why I disagree with it on some levels.
Fetal (or embyonic) stem cells need to come from somewhere. If the government can control where these cells come from (eg. a miscarriage) then I'm OK. To me that's very similar to organ donation...
What I worry about is the relation this could have to aborted fetuses or, worse yet, fetuses that are bred specifically for this pupose. In my mind, according to my beliefs, that's crossing the line.

They are mostly opposing embryonic stem cell research because it is harvested from aborted fetuses which mostly only Pro Life Christians oppose that. Then there is also the cloning factor which lots of people think cloning is playing God and I agree.

Just to be clear, it isn't stem cell research, per se, that people oppose. What people oppose is EMBRYONIC stem cell research.
The reason most people oppose embryonic stem cell research has nothing to do with religion. They oppose it for the same reason they oppose abortion--because it takes the life of an innocent human being without proper justification.
You see, you can harvest stem cells from adults without killing them, but it is impossible to harvest stems cells from embryos without killing them.

As far as I understand it, the scientific reason that Christians oppose stem cell research is that it makes Baby Jesus cry.

Christians believe that the embryo is "ensouled". The embryo's in question are smaller than the head of a pin. Christians see these as "babies" and they see the destruction of them as "murder". If you think this is insane, then what's more insane is that Bush vetoes every attempt to fund research for it. Embryonic stem cell research is considered the hope for numerous cures and treatments for many diseases and is the future of medicine.

I am a born again believer and I am all for stem cell research.
I think all the doctors who perform abortions should do it using there own.
Christians, if there was a clinic across the street from your house where two week old babies were being butchered, to what degree would you be physical in stopping it? are unborne babies different?

They dont oppose stem cell reasearch, they specifically oppose EMBRYONIC stem cell research.
Huge difference. And its because of where it comes from. They are literally farming dead fetuses for stem cells.
Scuba Dude! Is that why you have such strong opinions on Christians? You dont understand them so you think they must be evil and bad?
