Why would the assembly line data link not release code information when attached to a scanner?

I own a shop, and have had this same problem before. I went to the parts store, and purchased a spray can of electronic cleaner, and gave both the scan tool, and the ALDL a good cleaning, replaced the battery in my scan tool, and checked all the pins in both links for any bent pins, and found one bent to one side that wasn't hooking up to the scan tool.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, then you will have to trace the harness back to the ECM and do the same thing where it hooks to the computer, or just clean all the connectors at the computer. Has this vehicle ever been in a flood? I have seen this with some vehicles that came out of the Hurricane Katrina area, that had been under water, and about every connection on the vehicle wasn't working because of the salt water that got into the connections. Even ended up cleaning the plugs for every electrical connection on the vehicle before things went back to working normal.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

If your scan tool powers up when you plug it into the aldl, then you may have an issue where the tool that you are using cannot interface with the vehicle computers.

When you turn the key on does the check engine lamp come on?

The aldl can get grease, dirt, and all sorts of crap in it. Use a small amount of soapy water on a q-tip on each of the contacts.
