I still say godammit, though I'm an atheist. To me it's just a phrase like For Cryin' Out Loud, or She's the Bee knees.
I'll also say 'christ' when exasperated.
It holds no religious significance but it gets the point across and besides, I like how goddammit sounds. It's very sharp, with that harsh 'g' and 't'.

I'm not an atheist and have never, nor would ever say that, as it is called "taking the Lord's name in vain", for those who think its "just a word". The word is highly offensive and makes me cringe to hear someone say it. What's the point in the question anyway??

first of all--let me thank u for a wonderful laughing fit!
next, i would like u to know that i was a very vocal atheist at one time. the word "goddamnit" means--God damn this thing or person--it does not mean to damn God. it is the opposite of saying "God bless this person or thing" Christians are supposed to be in the business of BLESSING someone not cursing them--and thus the word "Goddamnit' became a curse word.
when i was an atheist i cannot ever remember saying anything that would infer that i believed that God really existed--so this was not one of my chosen words. when i got mad i may have said other words not relating to God. as a Christian--and a Christian minister--i choose only to BLESS people--even those who curse me. and believe me, there are a lot of people cursing me--but they are doing it not to me--but to the one i believe in--JESUS CHRIST. i do not preach-- I do not have to--i merely POINT to JESUS--he brings them to himself--the same way he brought me to himself.
and i say to you and all the others "GOD BLESS YOU" and I know HE will. thanks again for the laugh--good medicine!

I still say that. I started saying it back when I was a Catholic, and I really see no reason to change. It gets the attention it needs. I also use "Jesus H. Christ" a lot, too, and even bluer versions of it. They're just words, now, anyway.

And what do they say to someone who sneezes??
Just "bless you" instead of God Bless You????

I actually say "dagnabbit" a lot, not because I'm worried about offending "God", but because I think "Goddammit" makes me sound like I have a potty mouth.

Why can't they say that? It's just a word to an atheist? Do you think that when people do say that, they are actually "damning" God?
