They won't let God speak outside the Bible. They won't take any more words from God if it is not in the Bible. Is this blasphemous?

I won't go into the many interpretations of God's word in the Bible which is a whole other subject.

Of course I'm referring to your Book of Mormon and other scripture.

To All: Is God only as smart as the Bible?

Hello Chad, please list in your comment the true prophets of modern society and the false prophets. You could also say why or why not but that may take too long. Thanks.

The arguement that God does not speak outside of the Bible is a little eroneous to me, as a Mormon and to most others if you really think about it. Do you belive in prayer? Do you belive that God can inspire you or prompt you to do things as you pray or as a result of your prayer? Then, in a very real sense, God is speaking to you "outside of the Bible."

Mormons believe that God can speak and say anything he wants to and it is not up to us to say what he can or cannot do. God knows what he wants to do. We believe that God is a dynamic God and not stagnant. If you read the Bible, from the Old testament throuogh to the end of the New Testament, God has given revelation according to the needs of his people at the time. What God told the Israelites to do about their worship rituals are differrent in the time of Christ and again were a little modified by Paul, Timothy and others.

Likwise, God reveals his will today. To his prophets just like throughout history to Adam, Moses, Noah, Abraham, Peter. etc. Moromns believe that God reveals his will in this day and age also, to his prophets. And that revealed world outlines God's will for us.

So, if God reveals his will through prayer to us, why can he not also reveal his will through other means as well. Ie through other scripture? That other scripture, the Book of Mormon is not contradictory to the Bible, but supportive of it. The Book of Mormon is actually ANOTHER testament to Christ in addition to both the Old and New testaments.

We believe that the Church and associated priesthood authority that Jesus Christ bestowed upon the apostles was taken from the earth through attrition around roughly 175 AD. The period between 175 and 1830 (what we call the Great Apostacy) was a period in which that priesthood authority and continuing revelations from God was not present.

We believe that this authority was restored in 1830. Since that time, there has been a living prophet on the earth who receives continuing revelation. The Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a record of those revelations since that time.

The book of Mormon is a restored gospel of Jesus Christ that was preserved on plates and translated by Joseph Smith. It contains the record of the history of the people on this continent, their prophets, wars, civilization, etc.

This is a very quick explanation. For more information on this and other beliefs of the Mormon Church, why not invite the missionaries to your home. They will give you the discussions and you can decide for yourself, after praying, whether or not the things you have learned are true.

P.S. We don't bite!! :)

There is a small chapter in The Book of Mormon that I love... and though many people believe that this book is false and we are a cult, blah blah-yadda yadda...

It's still a great chapter, and I'd have to say that it is the one that made me stop and think. But it does not matter, because people have to have an open mind and heart to hear and see.

I am almost positive that many people have NOT read these verses. If they had, they might be a little slower at judging us and our beliefs. Perhaps not make a believer out of them... but make them stop and think as well.

People are so quick to judge before they let the words sink in. They are too busy ridiculing our beliefs in general that they think everything is automatically untrue.

They continually misquote a verse in revelations that says that no one should add to this record. Similar verses are found in other parts of the bible as well and though Revelations is the last book in the Bible, it is chronologically the last book. Besides they have been taught their whole lives that the bible is the end all and the be all and that it is the only word of God. Sometimes those beliefs can be hard to change.

What is vague about this?: 2 Timothy 3:15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Peter 1:19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,[which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

they all live in fear. i don't think they realize that the bible is many different books that are just a small part of the writings of God's people. when the bible was first put together these were the only books early scholars decided to include. scholars might be an overstatement. to think that God would not continue to talk to us really goes against what the bible teaches. maybe today's Christians think He is silent because we don't need Him anymore?

I don't know why. I would think all scripture would be welcomed, why limit God's words to one book?
That is one of the great things about our church, we believe in continued revelation, I don't believe God "said all he had to say" back then... He is still around, He still cares about us, and He still wants us to follow Him!

As one who holds to the historical Christian position, I adhere to what is known as scripture and has been tested. Whatever the Mormon church puts out has not been tested to the same criteria as the Bible has. On the other hand, it is blasphemous to accept what is put out to be God's word but is not.

I don't know why. Perhaps they are afraid that their interpretation of the Bible will be wrong, and they will have to step outside their comfort zone.

The bible warns of other gospels and false prophets. That is why I do not believe in the Book of Mormon or the words of the LDS.

Edit: to further expand upon my answer, I really don't believe there are Prophets anymore and that anyone claiming to be one is a false Prophet. Jesus taught us all we need to know, and he then died upon the cross for our sins, and so there is nothing more that we really need to know... and therefore no need for a prophet. The test for a false prophet is to look and see if they have made any false prophecies... and not one of the modern day prophets has shown to be false prophecy free.
