I am an atheist, and also an observer of human behavior.
I think that for some people, it is comforting to believe that there is some higher god directing their lives, and promising life after death. It satisfies their need to remove fear of death, and the removal of responsibility to find their own direction.

Brainwashing? Nobody ever told me when I was young that the Bible was true. I realize that what it teaches is true by reading it. I know I am a sinner. I didn't need a book to tell me that, but the Bible makes it clear that all who sin will be punished for it. The Bible also makes it clear of good news-a way to escape that eternal punishment, and that is Jesus Christ.
I believe in the Bible, and Christianity; not necessarily a religion. Biblical Christianity teaches of a relationship with Jesus Christ. I've heard the argument that you can't use the Bible to testify it. Well, I can look in the Bible to know God exists the same way I can look into the oval office to know the president exists. You might say, "you've seen him on TV" or you know he exists. Aren't those all second-hand sources? Yet most sane people believe that George Bush exists. You don't have to see him in person to know he exists. Similarly, you don't have to see God to know he exists. The Bible tells us he does, and it is as credible as somebody writing down that George Bush exists and 2000 years later somebody picks up a book that says that George Bush existed.
Mainly, though, I think people deny God because they love their sin. People love to masturbate, look at porn, lie to get out of something, have sex, get drunk, gamble and many other things. We love to do it-and by the time people grow up, they try to get out of it by saying the Bible is a fairy tale, when the real issue is that they're hoping that you fall for that so they can get back to whatever sin they like. They don't want to admit to someone greater than them. There's no reason not to surrender your life to God.
Then again, that girl looked pretty hot...guess my lust is worth going to Hell forever...

I am Christian. I do not believe in religion...It is about a relationship with Jesus. Christian - CHRIST-ian Follower of Jesus. Religion is man made, all about what we have to do to be saved in works and law.... You are saved by Grace through Faith in Jesus and that is it. No laws or how many you say that prayer or keeping the Sabbath, or doing this or that. Of course when you allow Jesus in your heart you naturally change how you act and what you do or do not do.

Because as small children they are told that the Bible is true. They are threatened that if they don't believe in God they will burn forever in hell. It's called brainwashing, and it's very effective.
