There’s no sure way as yet to prevent the eye disorders that often come with age, but nutrition is certainly an important part of the puzzle. It’s well known that malnutrition harms vision: a shortage of vitamin A, for example, causes night blindness and other problems. Vitamin deficiencies can also cause eye disorders such as cataracts in lab animals. Several other nutrients help protect vision. For example, carrots really are good for your eyes because they are a rich source of beta carotene. This and two other carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, are antioxidant pigments found in many plant foods. Lutein and zeaxanthin are also found in the retina of the healthy eye, specifically in the macula (the central part of the retina), where they act as a shield against blue light (a harmful component of sunlight) and may help protect against damage from ultraviolet radiation. Zinc is also found in healthy retinal tissue.

Nearly half of us will eventually develop cataracts, a clouding of the lens that can result in blindness, but now is easily and permanently corrected with outpatient surgery. Less common but also less treatable is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Characterized by distortions in vision, blind spots, and a loss of central vision, this is the leading cause of blindness among older people in developed countries: more than one-fourth of those over 75 show some signs of this disorder. No one knows what causes it, though it may be related to ultraviolet damage. But certain nutrients appear to play a role in preventing AMD—or at least delaying it—and in slowing its progression after diagnosis.

Good question. I used to pride myself on being very informed and in the current about every issue. I've found that I've backed off quite a bit more and feel a more happy person because of it. New York Times Week in Review tells me what I need to know. I take a daily glance at headlines, maybe skim the article but find that nothing really changes when you get down to it. Also, due to the area I live in at this time I am unable to watch television and the pricing is outrageous for cable. However, I have a feeling if I was able to watch it then I'd at least hear what the major stories are. Other than that, it's paper and online

Vitamins such as Ocuvite or Eyecaps are formulated especially for the health of the eyes. Although they have not proven that they can actually improve the health of the eye in such cases as macular degeneration, many studies seem to support the fact and that is why many eye doctors will recommend them. They do not however, improve the correction of the eye (nearsightedness or farsightedness).

There are several different formulations of Ocuvite, all slightly different.

Thye are used to help slow the progression of age related macular degeneration. Scientific evidence exists to show they are of some value in only some types of macular degeneration, specifically moderate degeneration with large, soft drusen (your eye doctor will need to tell you if you have that). There is no evidence that they help for other types of macular degeneration or for other eye diseases.

Eye vitamins will not help to eliminate the need for glasses.
