Have you considered try to get a job as a contractor in Iraq? Try talking to some of the different companies over there. You have a marketable skill, and time in country. If you knock out a year in Iraq as a contractor, you can afford to go back to school when you get back and not have to worry about money for a few years if you play it out right. Or take your time to find a good job. When you get out you can receive unemployment for about a year. They also provide training to give you more skills in the job market. There are options. Don't get frustrated. Ask your family for help until you can get established. Maybe move close to you or your spouses family (to help watch the kids) so you can both work. Spread the stress. Don't try to bear the full load. You've been serving your country for 5 years. It's time for others to give you a hand if you need it. Don't be too proud to ask for help. There are resources out there. Check out USAJOBS.com. They list tons of government jobs all over the U.S. that you qualify for. Many pay very well... Look for Vet centers in your community, etc. Good luck, and thank you for your service.

You could join the union of metal workers. Possibly you could work in construction. It is a dangerous job. But not as much as being in Iraq. I would look in to it. Iron workers and metal workers put up buildings and mostly setup the buildings with the metal beams. I don't imagine that they will throw you on a skyskraper at first but you could work in other cities and travel. After a while you could become a foreman and make a good living as a supervisor. Plus you would most likely be in a union and get all the perks that the army offers. Unions will allow you to not work for x amount of years and then retire with benefits. Thats what I would look into. Well those were my thoughts. Good Luck. And just wanted to tell you that your doing a good job!

You can start looking online for jobs in the area you wish to live. Also begin getting your resume' together. Your wife can start this for you, just tell her what to include experience wise. Why should you fear failing in the civilian world? The same determination, strength, and ability you showed in the Military will play out the same for you in civilian life. Start looking forward to having a more normal life. Yes it is a challenge, but you have already been challenged and met it. Whatever you do, trust me you will do it well. Best of luck and thank you for your service and devotion to your country !!!

It really sounds like you don' want out. First of all, figure out where you want to live. You have to make that choice for yourself now. Once you have figured that out get on-line and look for career services in that city/state. Being that you have been trained with skills that cross over to the civilian life you shouldn't have too much trouble. If you are really feeling anxious about it start looking at things now, have your family help you out as well. The Internet is a beautiful thing, use it to your advantage. The only way i know of to get rid of your anxiety is to work through it. The more organized you are about your transition the easier it will be for you. Ask your friends and family to help you look while you are in Iraq. This will help your stress level and make them feel that they really can do something to help you. Good Luck God Bless and thank you

Well, as far as contract work in Iraq and afghanistan....stay away from that stuff. With ur Military occupational skills you might want to try KBR. Thats if you want to even be deployed again...Its good money, but its contract work and nothing is ever 100% solid as some other federal or govt jobs out there. when you get back start talking to ur carreer planner and go to job fairs that are held at bases and stuff. When you get back and u still want to get out make sure you do ur homework and start sending out resumes likes its crazy. U can also get unemployement benefits after u get out and looking for a job. They military usually helps transition from military to civilian. Just dont go with the flow of motions and say "yeah Im getting the **** out!!!" and scratch ur as s but pay attention to people that help gi's transition. make sure you know how to write killer resumes!!! My husband got out 2 years ago as an E6. We live in FL and he has been unable to find a job as a civilian. He just got a job as a security guard, but only makes $9/hr. He has decided the only option is to go back active duty. He is beginning Warrant Officer school next month to become a pilot. I would definitely start looking at what type of work is available in the area you plan to live once you get out. I know many people are having a hard time finding work once out of the military, but I also think it depends what state you live in.
Best of luck to you, and thanks for your service!!!

You have one of the most marketable skills for a civilian. My advice is that if you don't already have one, is to get your welding certification and then the sky's the limit as far as a salary. I work for one of the best construction companies in the world and we are always looking for skilled labor. Especially skilled labor that is willing to travel. Welders in my region of the United States easily make 17-32 dollars an hour especially if they have their certificate. You should have no problem getting that if you don't already. I know that if you are anything like me you want to get home and make a living and forget about your military experience. Especially where you are currently serving. I know you probably have alot of fond memories but your family needs you too. The company I work for pays top dollar for people who are willing to go overseas and work as well. It is not uncommon to pay someone with your skills a bonus of one hundred thousand dollars plus their salary if they agree to spend 1-2 years overseas. Never in an area where it is as dangerous as you are in now. God Bless you and get home safely.

Start right now by using sites like Hot Jobs, Career Builer, and Monster. See what is avavilable in the areas of the country you would like to live. Get a resume together and e-mail it to these people with a cover letter. In the Cover letter state when you are available and why.

I would suggest Reenlistment, because you would be doing yourself a very good service
and the US Army is a very good career. Your job sounds good. If you stay in for 20 years and make some more rank, your retirement would be ggod and the job propects for welder/metal worker sounds very good. See a Career Counselor at your unit or battalion level and they will explain the benefits better to you!! You will not be sorry!!
