Does anyone know if a master list of FDA approved building materials exists somewhere? Specifically I am trying to find out if grade 202 stainless steel is FDA approved.

the FDA doesn't approve building materials. they approve food & drugs. hence the name Food & Drug Administration.
you're probably looking for the EPA Environmental Protection Agency. look for your list there.

If memory serves me correctly, there is always a notation on material, especially pills, to say the product/material is or isnt FDA approved.

Stainless steel and titanium are used alot in medical devices such as hip joints. I can't remember if grade 202 is FDA approved, but my guess would be that it is because a hip joint would be found to have chromium, nickel and manganese. Check out:
