It would have to be one weak cable. Either that or a lot of people jumping up and down in the elevator. In any event, it is not a good idea to jossle the elevator around. It has a few contraptions on it designed to keep it from falling. You may accidentally set on of those off and be stuck in an elevator.

Well, Bubba how much do you weigh? Elevators usually fail due to gross neglect since they have such a high margin of safety built into them. The exceptions might be special application such as in a situation where it is being used for the first time, or when some of the fail-safe, or backup systems have been disengaged like a Chernobyl. You know nuclear power is always safe.

hell ya ,it happens everyday,goto your nearest mall or hotel ,take the stair case to the top of the building ,cuz u dont want it to fall before you git to the top ,of course .Now hop in the elevator ,and press lobby or 1st floor . Jump yur *** up and down as hard as you can ,and prepare for that hard landing sucka. Just think you will be like Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

The short answer is no. Elevators, like bridges, are designed with a very high safety margin.

great question, your force in newtons would have to be greater than the maximum weight the lift can take i have no idea how much that is
