It comes and goes to the point I forget about it until it comes back. It hurts when I open, chew, spit, or doing various movements with my mouth. It sends a really bad feeling through my whole body. It hurts so bad I start to cry and can't eat.

If you were to come to my office the first thing I would do is try to find out WHY this is happening to you. Do you chew a lot of gum? Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? Maybe only when your stressed? Do you bite fingernails?

There are appliance we use called Splints. They are available threw the dentist or orthodontist and are worn at night or even around the house. They relieve pressure on the joints and ease pain.

Your TMJ is really the balljoints that connect your lower jaw. Some people even have assymetries which can be the problem for the pain. Depending on your age this may or may not be permanently fixable.

It really depends on WHY your TMJ is bothering you, to figure out how to fix it.

I strongly suggest asking your dentist but most orthodontist are much more experienced with TMJ

I saw a case on tv the other day where they used botox injections(3 near each jaw) to decrease tension, or relax the jaw to a point where it helped tremendously. Botox only lasts 3--6 months but the patient actually said it worked.

HELLO PALETTE,

YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR DENTIST MAKE YOU AN N.T.I. BRUXISM APPLIANCE. THIS IS NOT A NIGHT GUARD BECAUSE THESE WON'T STOP YOUR GRINDING AT NIGHT. GOOD LUCK.
