Today my son started taking fentanyl 12 mcgs/hr and I have concerns about this pain patch.
He has had chronic back pain associated with a herniated disc for a couple of years and doctors don't seem able (or willing) to do anything to fix his problem. He has been taking narcotic medication for this (Percocet) and also attending a pain clinic where he has had four prolotherapy treatments. The doctor at the pain clinic is now prescribing this fentanyl patch which seems like a low dose. If anyone is taking this patch or has taken this patch, please write about its' effects on you, whether your dose was increased and whether or not it helped you. He is unable to work, has no income, and no one seems to be doing anything to help him except medicate him. Any advice?

had the same problem. =( it wasn’t until I did natural remedy I got any relief it only took 1 week to see a huge noticeable difference.
Valerian Root, Glucosamine & Chondroitin Sulfate. Take twice the dose the bottle recommends. Then once you are to normal, take the normal dosage.
Side effects for taking to much: Gas
I did this for 3 months, and my muscles started to relax, and my spine decompressed on its own, and I gained two inches of height.
I had 2 herniated disks, and 3 buldged disks. in my lower lumbar
I can now walk and sit again. !!! =)

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment
http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

As a medical provider, I'm sorry to hear about your son's condition and dependency on the narcotics. You could always find another orthopedic doctor or pain management clinic if you are not satisfied. As far as having surgical intervention for his disc, there a good chance his pain will continue or the surgery will fail.

1] take glucosamine [ at least one 200 mg. pill for every 50 pounds of weight until it starts working; then 3 a day for normal size adult ] and omega 3 oils
2] visit a chiropractor, recommended by a satisfied customer
3] massage therapy
4] physical therapy
Does he do ANY exercise? The less he does, the less he will be able to do.
I have hurt my back [ catching patients ] three times, and my neck several times as well.
Try some back exercises, under supervision of doc, physical therapist, or chiropractor [ pelvic tilts, bridging, etc.] , and low impact exercise like walking, cycling, or swimming.
Go to nismat.org, and look for low back pain relief for some very good exercises.
[ I do them every day, even at conferences, and they have helped a lot of other people with back and hip problems. ]
