TACO SALAD OR DIP 1 lb Lean hamburger or ground turkey 1 envelope Taco seasoning mix 1 bottle Catalina French Salad Dressing ½ big bag Tortilla chips, broken up some 4 oz Jalapeno peppers, sliced 4 oz Sour cream 4 oz Shredded Mexican cheese (or more to taste) Garden salad including lettuce, tomato, onion, green peppers, scallions, cucumbers or whatever you like 1. Cook hamburger with taco seasoning according to package directions. Chill while making salad. 2. Combine salad, taco meat, cheese and tortilla chips 3. Moisten with Catalina dressing to desired wetness, toss well 4. Serve immediately with sour cream and jalapenos on side If making into a dip, be sure your salad ingredients are cut very small. Use tortilla chips to scoop up the dip (I took this to a pot luck and the others ate it this way before I could assemble it into a salad, they liked it so I just smiled and took the credit for a wonderful dip). If taking to a pot luck, add the dressing and tortilla chips at the location so it doesn’t get soggy.

Fry your ground meat or chicken strips with the taco seasoning as directed on the package. You may want to add just a little less water so it's not soupy.
Either purchase taco bowls or make your own. Take a large (I think 10 inch) round tortilla and form it into a bowl using an oven safe bowl (glass or stainless steel). Bake at 350 degrees. When it starts to hold its shape, remove it from the bowl and flip it over and bake directly on rack for a few more minutes until crispy. Remove from oven and let cool. You pretty much have to watch them because they don't take long to cook.
Layer your favorite taco toppings into the bowl.
lettuce, tomato, green onion... and the meat, of course (if using meat)
Top with salsa, sour cream and shredded cheese.
Sooooo yummy! =)

This isn't a Taco Salad but it's similar and very good. I had never had it before until my brother-in-law and his wife had us over for dinner. I would have never thought of it myself. It doesn't have a name.
Hamburger - cooked and crumbled (she used ground turkey, cooked it as a whole shape in a flat pan and broke it into pieces)
1/2 medium sweet onion - diced
4 Roma tomatoes - diced
2 avocadoes - diced
1 can kidney beans - drained and rinsed
1 bottle French Dressing (you will use part of this)
1 pkg Frito chips
Place the cooked meat, onions, tomatoes and beans in a bowl. Pour over the dressing and use only as much as needed to coat everything. Add the avocadoes and stir again to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Serve in a bowl with the chips and dressing on the side. Tell your guests to spoon out the salad into their own plate, sprinkle it with the chips - stir them in - add more dressing if they want - and Enjoy!!!

Well, taco salad is very basic, ground beef, beans, lettuce, tomatoe, onion and cheese and sour cream. You could vary it by using chicken or carne asada or shredded beef - put your beans in whole instead of refried, add some avocado slices, use two kinds of cheese (preferably Mexican cheese). I'm Mexican and taco salad is not a Mexican dish. It's just made up of what one would put in a taco.
Use a homemade salsa with some good flavor - tomatoes, green & while onions, cilantro, jalapenos and yellow chiles.
Good eating!
