He has remarkable table manners at home and at other people's homes it seems to just happen at school. He is currently grounded for his latest episode and will stay that way until he shows us he has changed. And when we asked him why he does it, he doesn't have an answer.

The eating like he's never going to have food again, he's probably going to hit a growth spurt. Give him lots of filling, healthy snacks until he slows down.

The licking is a sensory thing. My daughter has licking and kissing issues. What works for us; She has a vibrating toothbrush and she brushes for 3 timed minutes in the morning, another minute or two right before school, two minutes after, and three again before bed. You could ask your school's Occupational Therapist for more ideas, and the OT could even observe him during lunch to see what's triggering him.

Does he put things in his mouth; Like toys, his sleeves, or shirt collars?

If you don't already, you could try packing his lunch. Give him foods meant to be licked, lots of really crunchy things, and unless allergic, give him some peanut butter with things to dip. Mine like pretzel sticks, bagel chips, apples, celery, and their favorite is a bowl of peanut butter and a spoon. For breakfast and lunch try giving him stronger flavored foods. Like carrots with a homemade ranch dressing, some spice in eggs for breakfast...There are so many more things you can do.

If a behavior is caused by a sensory need, using behavioral techniques makes the behavior worse. If the behavior is not sensory related, using sensory techniques will NOT hurt, but may not work. Always address all behaviors with an open mind to sensory needs first!

Does your family sit down together and eat dinner? The best way to teach kids table manners is to practice at the dinner table at meal time. I'm not saying you don't, but I know a lot of people who sit in the living room and eat dinner in front of the tv. Their kids don't usually have very good table manners. It is also possible that your son thinks this is funny and he's just getting a kick out of embarrassing you. I would probably ground my son from some activity he likes every day that the teachers tell me he did this at lunch.

When you speak of your Son sucking on his shirt collars and jackets, it sounds to me that he might do this out of nervousness, as to soothe himself, such as when a kid sucks their thumb. As to why he shovels food into his mouth, it sounds as though he's excited about eating!! That could very well become a problem as an adult, such as food being a "comfort" to him, therefore leading him to being overweight.
