When you are 18, you can take an EMT-Basic course. This course takes about 3 months. At the end of the course, you must take the national registry exam to become an EMT-Basic. Once you are a basic, you can go to paramedic school. Paramedic school takes about a year and a half. It's a difficult school, but I'm sure you'll be able to handle it. After completing paramedic school, you will need to take the national registry exam for paramedics. You'll have to study daily during paramedic school in order to complete the paramedic program and pass the national registry exam.
You do not have to attend college to become a paramedic, but I strongly recommend you go to college first. If you are injured on the job as a medic, a college degree will give you plenty of option in other lines of work.
Emergency medicine isn't for everyone. It's a high stress job with long hours and low pay. I would recommend contacting your local fire departments or EMS organizations to schedule a ride along. This will let you see what being an EMT is really all about.
One last thing, documentation is a huge part of a paramedic's job. Poor spelling and grammar are not acceptable in your documentation. Spend some time working on your spelling and grammar.

You have to be at least 18 to take the classes you need to become a paramedic. Also I would recommend taking an EMT-B class first. Get you EMT license first and work in the field first to get some experience then take the paramedic class.

Hello Becky:
If you are very serious about becoming a paramedic, you will want to study grammar, mathematics, biology, general science, basic chemistry, and some basic physics. You will also want some training in psychology.
Best of luck.

You dont have to goto college. Sadly.
But you do have to take a extensive MMR/paramedic course. My ex did it. Cost him about 3 grand, but was well worth it.
He had no previous medical/college experience beforehand.

I'm not sure of your age or what country you're in. If you are in the US you can start getting involved with a local rescue squad around age 16.
