I was baking the other day and the sugar I was going to use smelled really awful, like rotten grain. What gives? I store it in an airtight, dry container. I dumped the sugar into a bowl to let it dry out, thinking that was the issue, and washed the container. But the sugar still stinks, stinks, stinks. Did it go bad?

Sugar doesn't spoil but it will pick up the smell from a container. Store sugar only in a glass or ceramic container. Plastic holds odors and can ruin the taste of sugar. If it was a plastic container you can soak it in baking soda to help get rid of the smell, but sugar should not be stored in it.

Good luck!

Sugar does not go bad but when it sits for a while in the container it might absorb a scent and clump up. It is good no worries.

No sugar does not spoil. Does your pantry have something going bad in it? Was your sugar stored near something with a funny smell? I hate wasting food so I can imagine how you feel. Sorry for your mishap
