OK dude, your question can simply be answered by another question.
Does this car have the 3.0 V6? If so, YES! buy it. These are very tough engines and it will probably last another 40,000 miles or so.
But if it's the 2.7 liter...RUN. Don't know how it lasted that long.
And no, the engine is not replaced with the transmission, unless they specify that it was.

Always figure approx. 17,000 miles per year on a car on average. So you've had it 10 years, or it is 10 years old, so the mileage is just about right. The car was driven hard. Are you going to do the work yourself or have it done by an outside source. Stay away from the mom and pop shops as they may not be there in 6 months even though they give you a 10 year warranty on the tranny. When you replace the tranny-get a rebuilt one if you can, a lot cheaper. Auto wrecking yards can tell you more about dirct costs, but you will have to remove the parts yourself and put them in as well. Go/Stop could be a fuel injection system problem. With all these things wrong with your car you are talking thousands of dollars. A few thousand for the tranny work itself. Another $250+ for the A/C. Tracing the fuel injection system fuel ines, tank, carborator, etc. even more money. I hope you got the car for $150. If you paid anything more, and having tranny problems from the start, you got ripped off big time. Sorry for the bad news. Take it as a learning experience and ALWAYS have a mechanic look at a used car BEFORE you hand over any money. A 1996 Intrepid with that many miles would have any man running in the other direction. Can't say you didn't try! $$$$Oops!

RE:
1996 Dodge Intrepid Mileage Question?
I am thinking of buying a 1996 Dodge Intrepid. The problem is it has 217,000 miles on it. BUT the new transmission only has 33,000 miles on it. The most important part of the car... I test drove it and it ran GREAT! Do you think it would last me at least two years without spending over say $500 in...

I had a 96 Intrepid for 8 years... the tranny went out 3 times but I drove it almost 350,000 miles before I traded it for a newer car. I drove it from one end of the US to the other a couple times with no problems other than the transmission.
The engine is something totally different. Changing a tranny is like getting a bypass without having to get a total heart transplant.
If you have any questions take it to a mechanic you trust before you sign the paperwork for it. They'd be able to give you an accurate estimate of life left in the car before you make that investment.

When someone replaces a tranny, its usually just the tranny. A shop wont replace both unless specified. If it runs good, thats a great price for a 96. The 3.3 liter in some intrepids were known for head gasket problems, so make sure it doesnt have a blown head gasket if its the 3.3.

no it does not include the engine. at that kind of miles it is hard to say how long it will last, you need to take it to a shop and have it checked over, the engine will probably last a couple of years if it seems ok but there are alot of other things that can go wrong, controllers etc. and that can dollar you to death. if the price is right i would probably go with it i have a dodge truck with 245,000 and a dakota with 170,000 and so far so good. if you cant take it to the shop check all the fluids including the coolant, make sure the coolant isn't dirty or milky, check for leaks and make sure they are not to severe, drive it and see what suspension sounds like, and feels like. tie rod ends etc can get very expensive very quickly

Jimi,
That's a lot of miles. It is 11-12 years old now. Have it inspected first before you buy it. Hopefully it will have the larger 24V V6 engine in it.
No, they don't normally replace the engine when they replace the transmission, unless they are both shot.

Thats quite a bit of miles there...I just bought a 98 Stratus for $300 but it needed a new tranny ..it has 150,000 on it and was well taken care of and taken to Chrysler for tune ups everytime...she told me the history of the car ..so I took it....
one thing about these 604 transmissions...you must use the mopar trans fluid in them only ..do not use dexron it will tear it up....go for something that is around 6-8 years old to get....keep looking for something newer....

To answer your first question NO. Dont buy that car because there are way to many miles on it. See now if this car was German or Japanese engeneered it would last you about 250 thousand without causing any or little problems. but unfortunetly is a U.S. made car and it is old so its a bad buy. do not do it.
To your second question, Transmission and engine are two different things. You can replace the trans. without having to do anything to the engine. even though they might work together but they are 2 different things.
So they already replaced the old trans. with the new one that has only 33,000 miles on it? even tho its changed it will still give you problems.
