but then the prophet tempts Israel to go after other gods? They were to be stoned to death. (Deut.13:1-5)

More severe than if the prophet prophecied something & it didn't come to pass? They were just not suppose to fear this Prophet. (Deut18:15-22)

But if a prophetic word is of a different god who comes; in that prophet should be put to death.

It seems that the death penalty was if the prophet was leading Israel to other gods only.

Yes! Our God is Holy! Frankly, He is the ONLY LIVING GOD! Anyone who walks away from Him will experience death, not because He's evil but because they cut themselves off from the source of life. His love protected people from that thus the harsh consequences.

It reminds me of Jesus' waring in Matt. 18:6

6But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Leading people away from God the Father and God the Son is a very serious sin!

things were more severe in the old testament because it was only black and whitte no in between (or gray) just about if not all sins were punished by being put to death thats just the way God decided to do things but in the new testament (after the coming of Christ) being put to death is used less frequently because He wants us to serve Him from free will not fear.....hope that helps
