I came to this forum thinking it would be a great place to find answers to interesting questions regarding religion, to answers others questions about the same. What I am finding however is that the majority of the questions and answers are inflammatory in nature, against those of us who believe. If you are so opposed to what we believe why do spend time on a board discussing this topic? Would you not be better served as a person spending time on a board that asks and answers questions about something you believe, or that interests you?

In addition, even if you do disagree with something that is said, why is it not possible to state that without being belligerent?

My question was primarily in regards to the tone, language, and attitude used. I do not have a problem discussing things with those who oppose my view. My issue is with those who make rude remarks and make their points using inflammatory words.

Discussion is good for any topic, but discussion is the exchange of ideas and reasoning, not belligerence, name calling, bashing, and put downs.

I will recognize that both sides of the issue see the other side as being rude, inflammatory, and belligerent. My reason for asking is none of those. I am hoping that we can continue discussion from both sides, with all parties involved, minus that hateful words and phrases, after all, those words and phrases do nothing in proving anyones side of the issue.

If "God doesn't exist" is the truth, why shouldn't I answer that way? If people are looking for truthful answers, then I have something of value to contribute, don't I?

Why does it bother you so much? It's only an issue if you allow it to become one. I don't share the same beliefs you do, however, I am here to discuss the reasons why. I understand that you may find some things offensive when dealing with certain people, but thats life in general. If I had a dollar for every time I disregarded a question or ignorant comment, I would be able to buy everybody on this board a dinner and a movie.

I came to this forum to have meaningful discussions with people of all different beliefs and spirituality.. I found the majority full of ignorance, bigotry and an inability to debate rationally. Amongst the dross are some few treasures both believers and non who are interested in sharing ideas, thoughts and knowledge. These people are worth talking to and debating with... they ask thought provoking questions and provide insightful answers. Other people both believers and non contribute nothing but ignorance or abuse.. it happens everywhere, and as much as I can I try and fight against it, when someone challenges you, it's best to stand up for what you believe. So when a believer posts some ignorant and inflammatory question I will either answer it or ask a new question on the same subject. It's all in the hopes of bringing the TRUTH to everyone, the truth will set you free... Some people are beligerent and rude, they are to be ignored, don't bother answering them, other people who challenge and cause questioning deserve to be answered because they are trying very hard to bring knowledge and understanding to others. The problem is most believers don't want to be challenged, they feel threatened instead of stimulated ad they should be. Its all due to the nature of religion instilling a sense of "us against them" in it's followers. You need to forget that... we are all one and the truth will set us free, but to find truth you have to open your mind. I suggest you look beyond the beligerence to the cause which can be attributed to BOTH sides of the debate. People of MANY different beliefs or lack thereof have posted rude, inflammatory or beligerent things. You don't have to AGREE with someone to debate with them politely and this is NOT a forum exclusively for those who believe in any specific religion. It is no more for Muslims than it is for Agnostics, Christians, Jehovahs... It's for everyone, and everyone has questions about religion, some may challenge you and some may challenge me... that's the whole point. Don't get bent out of shape over the few people who can't handle a challenge and face it with dignity.

Feeling persecuted, today, eh?

If you don't want to see inflammatory questions, stop asking them.

"why do spend time on a board discussing this topic?"

This is why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4fQA9mt-Mg

"Would you not be better served as a person spending time on a board that asks and answers questions about something you believe, or that interests you?"

Absolutely not! Unlike back-slapping, self-affirming theists, we recognize that a danger is best addressed on the opponent's home court. The threat is here, so we are here to address it.

As far as bashing and belligerence, check your own little diatribe and those of fellow "Xians" Chosen by God, Catholic Crusader, et al. In general, however, you elicit belligerent responses in direct proportion to the belligerency of your question. You reap what you sow.

ADDENDUM

"I still remember 'tolerance' as one of the virtues being taught in virtually all the religions."

"Virtually all" conveniently excludes the big two of Xianity and Islam, neither of which is, in the least, tolerant of "unbelievers" and "infidels".

Apologies yet i'm making use of your question to have a bypass at Blood music. Blood music,i have reviewed your solutions and they are all a similar. what's incorrect no mind's eye? No witty repartoir? not something wise to say? they say the empty can rattles the most. shouldn't you be off praying.....to the enamel fairy? Now bugger off,the knowledgeable are trying to talk and also you're purely slowing the approach. Now to the question accessible. bypass to hell looks the default insult for some religionolygists,it concerns not that all of us understand hell to not exist. i do not oftentimes dignify it with a reaction. some religionologygists basically use it as a attitude to demonising those they don't accept as true with.

I understand what your saying.
I dont go looking for trouble and trying to start something. Although I admit you get drawn in sometimes.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, some are just very arrogant when they dont have to be.
Ive seen it from both sides.
It is sad.
Of course everyone are entitled to comment, But like you, I wish The Christians could converse without the hateful comments being thrown out there just to show hate.
The same goes for the Atheists rights too.
If everyone could show more respect or shut up.

I've found this site to have many open-minded people, as well as downright nasties. I play both sides. Depends on if the question is rude or really asking for advice/opinions.

Remember: whether atheist, agnostic, or religious, it is tit for tat. Believe me, atheists do not hold a monopoly on hateful responses.

If a question starts: "Christians" (or other religion), I may look at the full question, but usually won't comment, since it isn't addressed to me (atheist), unless its something nasty being asked. Religious beliefs are not excuses for being hateful or nasty.

I agree there is no need to be belligerent, and I apologize if I have been offensive. However, keep in mind:

1. people who do not believe in any God may still have a lot to offer to the Religion and Spirituality portion of the site, and it is a fairly weak faith that cannot stand to be questioned, and

2. why are you not questioning all the people who pose half-assed biology "questions" here in an attempt to shore up their own failing beliefs?

Its kind of hard to hurt peoples feelings when they agree with you. That's right I come here for the sole purpose of making jokes and hurting people's feeling.

But only because on the inside I'm really a sad person :(

Why do those of you who are believers insist on using this forum as a way to bash those of us who are?

I am not a Christian (or Jew, or Muslim) but Christians seem to have the mistaken idea that they own the entire category of Religion and Spirituality.

I think one of the hallmarks of a good believer is the ability to accomodate others (and their varied beliefs). I still remember 'tolerance' as one of the virtues being taught in virtually all the religions. I stand corrected though.

Besides, it can be very boring when everybody agrees with you, don't you agree?(lol)
