The pole is simply short for pole position. It is the inside of the front row when they start the race. Last night Ryan Newman edged out Jimmie Johnson for the Bud Pole Award, that means he qualified first overall.

Pole is the inside position on the first row. Normally this position is determined by Qualifying time. However there are instances when the pole position is given to the person with the most driver points or to the cars with the most owner points. The position is given to a person other than the fastest qualifier if Qualifying is rained out or canceled for another reason.

The term comes from horse racing as the inside of a horse race track has the metal/wood pole(the outside does too but the horses do not run around the outside of the track) so the horse that stats on the inner most gate is on the pole.

In NASCAR the number 1 Qualifier or Driver(Driver who has captured the Pole) in the pole position is on the inside of row one the number two qualifier is on the outside of row one, 3 is on the inside of row 2 and four is on the outside of row 2 etc.

A "pole" is a term used to mean that the fastest driver who qualified is first. Where they got the ter or name, don't know. It possibly came from when they would post your car number on the light pole at local Friday/Saturday night race in the 1960-70.

It's already been explained, and better than I could, but...

The Pole position is awarded to whoever is fastest in qualifying, for doing that, he's can pick whatever pit stall he wants for the race he got the pole in before anyone else, and he's awarded to be in next years Bud Shootout, and a few other obvious things or things I don't remember.

hope that helps.

"Pole" refers to the pole position, which is the front starting position given to the fastest qualifier. Its is normally the spot on the inside of the front row, although the pole winner has his choice if either inside or out.

The term comes from the horse racing term where the number one starter starts on the inside next to the inside pole.
