I've been reading articles on how they are cutting the price back by $100 but they are also taking away the ability to play playstation 2 games and dvd's and cd's doesn't seem like a big selling point! Anyone willing to buy a ps3 to just play ps3 games or blueray and nothing else!

The 40GB PS3 for $400 is only confirmed for Europe right now, although there are strong indications we'll see it over here as early as November. The lower price will definitely sell more PS3s - but I suspect most this of these will be used solely as Blu-Ray players - not game machines.

As you point out, the $400 PS3 won't be backwards compatible with any PS2 games, making it less attractive to many gamers. It will still play DVD movies and audio CDs, however, but again, this was never a big selling point of the PS3. If you want a DVD/CD player, Walmart sells them $35-50.

Lowering the price of the PS3 will help a little but is only part of the problem with the PS3. Now, there just need to be some big games for it, but many of the PS3's big planned releases have been pushed into 2008, so I don't expect this to be a very merry Christmas for Sony.

Of course more people are going to buy more PS3's with the price cut. This holiday season will belong to Sony without a doubt.

When you think about it, most people that are looking into buying a PS3 already have a PS1 and a PS2, so really the PS3 doesn't have to be backwards compatible, but it's just nice to have the backwards compatibility.

And most of all, many people just want the PS3 just to play Blu-Ray and new PS3 games. The backwards compatibility won't really be an issue because the majority of them already have PS2's.

I already have the 60GB PS3, and I recommend anyone planning on buying a PS3 to get it because it's the most backward compatible PS3 that can play most PS1 and PS2 games.

You are talking about 40GB PS3. It has no backwards compatibility. You can play regular DVD movies there. Most of the people won't pay 400$ to play good, but outdated PS2 games. If they want PS2 games - they'll get PS2. PS3 is a next-gen console for next-gen games. Time to move forward! :-)
