Why would that be odd?
He is a fictional character with no basis in reality. Just a re-hashing of the Horus myth.
So it makes perfect sense that he couldn't write his own history. Neither could Horus, or Thor or... well you get the idea.

Funny, I was just discussing this with my mom a little over an hour ago.
Okay, so let's suppose Jesus HAD written something. What would He have written? There are two choices:
1. Words of wisdom. If Jesus was what His disciples claimed He was, He was very humble. So that's ALL He would have written. However, words of wisdom would not have proven that He was anything special. He would have been another Solomon.
2. Another answerer said that if Jesus had written an autobiography, it would have been like He was tooting His own horn. Those are the exact words that I used when I was discussing this with my mom, strangely enough. And it's true. Could you picture this?
"My name is Yeshua. I am the prophecied Son of God, the Messiah. I was born of a virgin under the rule of Augustus..."
If Jesus HAD written something, it would have made it into the New Testament, in which case skeptics wouldn't believe it anyway.
And by the way, it wasn't forty years. It was between 15 and 60. Which really isn't that unusual for that time.

well, how would it look if one of them did write the books. It's enough that some people don't believe in god now but if the disciples wrote all the books, people probably wouldn't take their word for how things really went in those stories b/c they would think that they said the things that are said in the books b/c they are were God's followers. Sometimes people believe things better when it comes from someone who is like them.Or who witnessed something first hand.Based on the fact that the pharisees were all ready trying to prove him wrong and make them look bad, they would have something else to try and use against them.and about the fourty years thing, I suppose that if the story was going to be told, that Jesus wanted the whole story told.and that included the disciples and that journeys after Jesus left.It is not always necessary for us to know all things.sometimes God will reveal things to us personally and some things we might not be ready for.though that is not a reason not to believe.

Abe some human beings don't have any intensity they're only shallow. i found one component that pointed to the reality about the apostles changed into the very undeniable reality that once one and all died they were not with yet another apostle so in the journey that that they had denied Christ which i'm particular some had a threat to do, not one of the others could have nicely-known. yet i like to take atheist to the position their narrow minds have by no skill been. Ask one if he's as prepared to died for his unbelief as a Christian is for his perception. tell him you understand him more desirable than he knows himself for if a loopy guy positioned a gun to his head and stated, "in case you've self belief you stay in case you do not i will blow your brains out." now you understand what could be answer positively.

We call the gospels a "testament". This is a legal term. It is a writ of testimony given as a witness for a coming trial. In the legal circles, you give a witness and a person writes down the testimony as heard for use in a coming trial. We are given the evidence before hand, and make our judgments accordingly. How we respond to the testimony will govern the results of our coming trial before the court of judgment.
In the Jewish law, there needed to be the voice of two testators to be established as fact (ref. Deut 19:15 & John 8:17). The gospels double that with four.
John 21:24
This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

Keep in mind that while Jesus was living, he and his followers were considered "extremists", if not outright pariahs, in their new views concerning religion - - which, agree or not, was a modification of Judaism - - in the same way that, today, we'd consider anyone espousing a "new" religion. Thus, anything that was written about it probably would not have been read by the masses (never mind that making copies of such would have been prohibitively difficult and expensive, back then, and assuming that anyone would bother reading it and, of course, assuming they were literate).
Then, as now, it is considered the height of egotism to write one's autobiography, and, IMHO, Jesus was a humble and relatively shy individual, so he would not have written his own story.

There have been plenty of people throughout history that didn't write about themselves. The only valid point you might have for this is that he didn't write anything (at least anything recorded) Also, Matthew and John were disciples. They saw most of the events that they recorded first hand. It is a bit curious why they didn't do it sooner than 40 years later, but a lot of history was recorded much later than forty years after the events occurred.

You have false information:
Jesus left us nothing on purpose. He knew some Catholic would worship the paper and forget what it said.
Secondly who told you they were written 40 years after? We have fragments of the gospel of John which was obviously written last. They are dated at 67 A.D.
If He died around 33 or there abouts then this is not 40 years.

There are stories about Jesus' gospel and that it has been found but not released as it has controversial content ( eg. his marriage) and they haven't got any way to confirm it was actually by 'the' Jesus himself. As with all such documents, its locked up the Vatican never to be seen by the public eye.... or so they say
.... have you watched the movie 'Stigmata' if my memory serves me well, there is mention of Jesus' Gospel....
But in answer to your question, yes i do wonder why it took so long.

Perhaps you never read II Timothy 3:16-17 -- "ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God."
Since Jesus is God, and since he inspired and directed the writing of the Bible, in essence, He did write His own story.
Time is not a factor with an eternal God. His memory of things never fails, and what He imparts to the writers of the scripture comes from a perfect memory.

A lot was spread by word of mouth back then,
but does it not make more sense that others tell the "greatest story ever told" ? Wouldn't it sound like him tooting his own horn? Plus, his purpose was fulfilled and John, Peter, and the other disciples needed to testify of the signs and wonders they witnessed
