What is the difference between Maternal and Paternal.
I know that is a stupid question, but I can't remember what it is...

MAternal,
PAternal.

Maternal- Mother
Paternal-Father!

Maternal is a relation thru the mother's side of the family whereas Paternal is thru the father's side of the family. Believe you understand the difference.

Maternal, female(Matriarchy) Paternal, male (Patriarchy).

Ah, language is so much fun! MAternal: Ma (mother, mom);
PAternal: Pa (father, dad).
Perhaps this method will help you in it; of course, it is MAter, PAter in Latin, which you might encounter in old census records.
