People just think that the world revolves around them. They think that because they are out, and you are working that they ar ebetter than you because they have more money. They think that their SUV or sportscar makes them a better person, when in reality, they are not even being humane. Next time you encounter these types of people watch what they do the enitre time. If they have kids, they will ignore them, they will not tip well, and odds are, they are driving some self indulgent hunk of metal that they don't need.

I absolutely agree with you! I work at a grocery store as a cashier and I can't even count how many rude people that I see in a day...because the number is astronomically high!
I say hello to people who stare blankly back at me. I'm not prying into their lives, I'm simply greeting them, and to get no response customer after customer can be a very defeating experience.
Phones are a huge problem at my job. Talking and talking and talking, never acknowledging me. Yes, I am 'serving' you at the moment, but without me you couldn't buy groceries. I am a mother and I am trying to provide for my son, there is nothing lowly about that, so I don't see why people believe I am substandard or uneducated because I cashier. I bet you get a lot of that as a hostess as well. Everything is me, me, me, now, now, now.
I think everyone should be required to wait tables or work retail for one month out of their lives, to give them a little perspective into what its like. Some people have no idea how rude people can be.

OMG, I love it! "Three Bears Syndrome"! I'm totally going to start using that one!
As a receptionist, I totally agree. Our jobs are very similar. We greet the public when they come in and sometimes have to deal with some really, really rude people. Don't you just love it when they come in and don't even say anything to you? They just stand there looking around as if they're admiring the scenery and you should have to call them over there. GRR! And then there are the ones who sit there staring a hole through you because they're not getting called quick enough, and then yell at you because apparently it's all your fault. Gosh, I could go on for DAYS!!!
I remember one incident when I went to go pick up lunch at a local restaurant and while I was waiting for the food, about 3 or 4 older ladies came in. They were all giggling and laughing so loud that the hostess had to ask 3 times how many were in their party. They finally said (very snottily, mind you) "Oh well, that actually depends on who all shows up that we invited". I wanted to look at that woman and say "WTF kind of answer is that?!? Just freakin' guess-timate!". When other ladies began showing up the hostess went to seat them, but they were all too busy greeting each other to follow the obviously very aggravted hostess. I felt so sorry for her!
Don't worry honey, I feel your pain!

I always wondered that. I think they just had a bad day and they are hungry. I am polite no matter what. I know your job is hard and I was a host seating people too. The only thing that would and has made me mad is when the hostess skips your name when you have first available and seats someone else that came in after you did. That got me going. All I wanted was the next table not smoking or non smoking...just the next table. I try not to be rude to them though. I am nice but tell them that wasn't the right thing to do. I have had experience when I was nice and the hostess wasn't nice and got snippy. I told the manager on that and I think it cost her job.

Sigh! Yes, its true! You'll just have to be understanding enough that the customer is always right. Otherwise, you'll be given the boot by your manager. I try to understand this also as I have a restaurant of my own. It turns out that people have that kind of attitude when they are hungry and need the immediate satisfaction for that hunger. Let me give you an example. Have you tried feeding an infant? Of course, you can't explain to the child to wait. They need food and they need it right away aka NOW. A lot of people but not all know that a little courtesy goes a long way. In the end, all they know is, they need to get what they pay for. I suggest is that you stretch your patience a little bit more. If not, talk to your supervisor about it.

I know exactly where you are coming from! I was a waitress for a few years. I loved the money but could not handle the stress of people being jerks. Its funny that people look down on serves or hostesss' but in reality if you are working at a good restaurant then your making more money than most people do. Some nights I would get $400 tips not including my hourly wage and walk away with $1500.00 in 8 hours. I was making more money than someone with a degree! We work very hard and they just don't get it. They think it is easy...well dealing with them it is not! It is not us that slows down the time it is the cook or the people in front of them. They expect a gourmet meanl in Mcdonalds time. LOL People in general have attitudes and need to adjust them. Obviously they have deeper issues if they can not be nice when they go out to eat. On the other hand I understand that they want good, quick service when they are paying alot for a meal, but come on its life and people need to realize that!

Probably because they think they are above you!
I work in a supermarket and i get worse treatment.
One of my huge pet hates is when I ask for payment and they just throw it on the counter even though my hand is out ready.
Ive decided since to do the same when returning there change and it soon makes them look up and notice you!
I have to apologise about the wait (which there ususally is as I work in a huge Asda) and they dont even notice you, or mutter something under their breath which is much worse.
I treat people the same as they treat me, Ive had false complaints too, but our managers know the score as there is 24 hr cctv on every till with sound so can be checked instantly if Im accused!
Just smile, show them the menu and just get the chef to spit in their food!!!lol!

I'm finding more and more that people are rude in general, not just when they go out to eat, but maybe moreso then.
Some people think because they are paying for a meal they have a right to be obnoxious and treat the help anyway they want to and they seem to get off on being rude.
It sounds like you may be a little over-sensitive because everyone's gonna ask how long's the wait because let's face it, we didn't come to converse with the hostess. (not trying to be ugly to you, just real). Whether we like it or not, the public is paying our salary when they come in to dine at our restaurant.
Continue to be courteous and smile and be professional and remember whatever goes around, comes around.

I don't think every customer who comes into your restaurant is rude - probably just a few. No matter what type of job you have, you will always find rude people. For the most part, I don't think they mean to be rude - they may have had a bad day, or gotten bad news - any number of things. You're absolutely right about still being friendly and considerate even when your customers are not. Who knows, you may change their disposition and brighten up their days.

Ouch. I used to work at Denny's as a hostess and people seemed to come in just to share their sh*tty mood. I said "Hello, how many are we having today." with a smile and one said "If your our waitress I am going somewhere else." Then my manager came in and said "stop being rude to the customers". It shut down a few months after I left.
Anyhow, the point is when you work with people like that there will always be people in a bad mood no matter how perfect and bubbly you are.
