It is true that after 9/11 the Coast Guard deployed away from US shores, but their primary mission is protection of the US coastal waterways.

You would be better served talking with a Coast Guard recruiter who could give you skills sets and jobs they have available.

Aviation- Aviation Maintenance Technician, Aviation Electronics Technician. We not only work on the aircraft, but we also fly as Flight Crew. Our job is about ten jobs in one, which no other branch of the Military does.

Boat Force- Boatwainsmate, Machinery Technician... Those are the two rates which are assigned to small boats and cutters. They also participate in life saving missions.
