Hi, for the nonprofit I work at we are in need of several tax id numbers for several places of business. Is there a free place online we can go to find out these Tax ID Numbers, seeing how they are public knowledge and we need them for accounting purposes?

They are not public knowledge, unless it is a public company that you are dealing with. If that's the case, you can find the TINs on SEC filings at the link below.

If they are vendors, then you need to ask them to complete a Form W-9.

They should have issued you a W-2G at the time that you collected the jackpot. If you lost it and don't remember the amount you can ask them for a duplicate. (I had 3 reportable jackpots last year and was handed the W-2G at the cashier's cage when I collected the win.) If you do know the amount you don't need the W-2G in hand unless they withheld federal or state income taxes (rare). You just show it as gambling winnings on Form 1040, line 21.

You send a Form W-9 to the company and they return it with their tax ID on it. That's the only legal way to get it.

There are some public repositories of that information, however they are notoriously inaccurate.

First, they are not public knowledge, and if they were, they would be used for identity theft.

Second, ask the businesses for them. Tell them that for you to be able to pay them, you will need to be able to report the payment to the IRS.
