Muscles hurt after exercise because lactic acid builds up in the muscles - its a by-product of cellular metabolism. Lactic acid builds up very quickly when the amount of exercise exceeds what a person is used to. It also means you are building strength in those muscles. There are several things you can do:
* drink plenty of water
* stretch the muscles
* massage the muscles while sitting in a hot bath
* walk for 10 or 15 minutes at a relaxed pace
* take a mineral supplement containing magnesium, calcium, and potassium

Stretching and the hot bath will make the biggest difference

Massage very gently if at all. It also may help to take a warm bath. NOT HOTTT, but pretty warm. Also, that is a good thing that you are sore... that means you got a very good workout the other day. You should walk like this more often and you won't be sore from it. That may be a sign that you are out of shape.

One, make sure you're wearing proper shoes for all that walking. You need the support, so wear good walking shoes, not flip flops. Get yourself some Advil, or even better Aleeve to help with the pain you're feeling now. Make sure you stretch a little before you go sight seeing and soak in a warm bath to help relax your tired muscles before bed.

Have you had any leg cramps lately? If so, then that is the reason why. I'm not sure why it happens, it just does. I've gotten a real bad charlie horse in my leg when running at football practice in high school, and my left leg from the knee down hurt so bad it wasn't even funny.

Do you take pain killers? If it is just sore muscles from lack of use, eat a can of tuna.
